Group hug - the remix.

Postby Diamond Dog » 05 May 2006, 13:43

As it's so damn quiet in here recently, I slipped into "Classic Threads" and read the whole of the "Group Hugs" thread. The one where we were asked to list ten random facts about ourselves. Anything you wanted, as long as it was about you.

Well, a year on, I think we could do with another go at it. So, I'll start off and , no doubt, see you all following behind me - as always.

1. I'm seriously considering quitting Royal Mail after 19 years - I honestly don't enjoy the job anymore, and an awful lot of people I used to enjoy working with have moved onto pastures new recently. It just isn't fun anymore.

2. The most fun I can ever remember having was the first time I visited Las Vegas back in '89. It's one fucked up, greedy, insatiable, unbalanced place - but, purely in a hedonistic sense, it cannot be beaten.

3. I love my daughters more, every day. When I get low - I look at them and buck my fucking ideas up, pretty sharpish.

4. The person whos musical taste most closely matches mine on BCB is The Slider. He won't like to hear that, but it's true. John can be an arse on occasions, but he's a general all round good guy, who knows his stuff. Is that two facts?

5. I held the school 100 metre record for five years - oddly, my sister was present when a boy in her class beat it. She couldn't believe it when the announcement was made as to whos record had been beaten!

6. The wierdest thing I've ever done? Attending the very first Mojo Jolly Up in April 2002 in The Moon Under Water in London. Freaky ain't the word. I was expecting 'internet geeks'. And I got, musical internet geeks........

7. The greatest musical genius was Jimi Hendrix. Without question. As time goes on, I become more and more entrenched in that view. At this precise moment I'm hearing that incendiary solo and end coda in " "The Stars That Play with Laughing Sams Dice" and thinking it's the greatest piece of music I know. Ever.

8. I love boxing, but constantly look at the simply devastating effect it has had on so many great champions that I find it very difficult to endorse with any great belief anymore. This doesn't however, in any way reduce my admiration for the greatest athlete there ever was - a certain Mr Muhammad Ali. That's genius, too.

9. I've often thought how easy it would be to kill someone - particularly some of those total and complete arseholes that spend all their life making otherslives a misery. I don't believe in the death penalty - but think specific acts of the vigiliante probably can be overlooked.

10. I still can't find a way to lose weight - and it bugs the holy shit out of me.

1. I love being a dad---look at the kids when they're sleeping and think how beautiful they are. That said, I wish I could go back 10 1/2 years and not have them around. What the hell did I do with all that free time?

2. I had colleges looking at me for possible scholarships to play waterpolo, but I liked getting stoned too much, so my grades suffered, and they stopped looking what they got to my transcripts.

3. I eked everything out of my basketball talent I could---which was basically the last guy on the bench on my varsity HS team. That's what got me back into music listening/playing. I couldn't chase young kids around the court anymore.

4. Wish I had more self-discipline and focus. It took me nearly 40 years to take guitar seriously. Both the guitar teachers I've had like my songs, but I feel my ignorance and time constraints hinder my progress. I get 45 minutes in the garage each night. My model is author Raymond Carver, who only had time to write when the kids went to bed.

5. I drink too much. And I know exactly when it started---after coming home from a tradeshow in Wash DC where I had to entertain sales reps every night. I've continued from that day. I have a drink every night---not a lot most nights---but every night. A habit I'd like to break.

6. Not a fact per se, I'm almost positive my smoking is going to catch up to me pretty soon. I thought I had had a heart attack last year, but all the tests proved I was okay. That's the wrong thing to say to a smoker. I use it as a rationalization that I can continue smoking.

7. After my dad dies, I'll will not have any contact with my brother. He's a year younger. We lived in kind of a remote place so we used to do everything together---basketball, baseball, football, started a band together. We have different values, my wife and I don't have any closeness to his wife and kids. I'd just rather not deal with the conflicting emotions.

8. I've made some really bad career decisions. Got teaching degree, but didn't stick with it. Stayed in comm'l insurance broker position 5 years too long. Quit a managerial position at a transit district out of sheer arrogance (a fomer staff member now holds my old position and makes $150,000 per year), tried to go back to teaching and fucking hated it. I'm pretty good at what I do---marcom (advertising, PR, writing, direct mktg, etc), but should've been smarter about career decisions.

9. Have come to the conclusion, I've done pretty much the best with what nature gave me as far as smarts, etc. When I was young, I used to have this vain and vague thought there was something out there waiting for me and I had some talent. I now realize I've pretty much topped out. But I'm not regretful of it.

10. Shouldn't expect the same of others just because I do something---just let it stand as it is, whether it's friendship, work around the house, etc. My expectations just lead to martyrdom, my wife tells me, and she's completely right. Sometimes I should just shut up and let things go.

11. Am completely amazed at the work people do around here to meet at JUs and make comps for each other. This is an interesting and special community and has reinvigorated my hopes for humanity in some ways. In some ways, not. I'm not as reciprocally ambitious or generous, but I'm getting better. Just wish everyone lived a bit fucking closer.

BBQ tonight at my place. I'll buy the ribs, you folks bring the beer.
Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk!

1. I have always been able to write, and write well. I have utilised it for various things over the years, but I am so inherently lazy (wrong term-difficult to motivate) that I feel I have let the talent go to waste for a long time. Every time I submit an article,or story, I get pleas to write more, but usually beer has got in the way. A recent call from The Guardian has inspired me to do more (that and the big fat cheque)

2. I have realised that alcohol has played a huge part in my life for too long. I grew up with a deeply alcoholic mother whose behaviour left me frightened of her from the age of seven upwards. I have no memories at all of her not being drunk, or on the way to getting drunk. Over the past few months I have reduced my drinking massively, and now only 'do it' about once a week. Ive saved it to football occasions, friends visiting, and dont have it in the house. Ive also gone from a size 20 to a size 16 as a result of the above.

3. I adore my job but it doesn't fulfill me creatively, in any way. I can do it well on auto pilot and I adore looking after people, and leading and inspiring a team as a good role model. But the idea of going any further up the ladder bores me to tears, as I dont have the mental capacity needed to progress with it. Im passionate about nursing but I think I will end up doing something that is a little off the beaten tracks, like ethics in nursing etc...

4. I have twice postponed finishing one of the modules of my degree simply because I got so waylaid with porn on the net I missed submission dates. Im really not proud of this, at all.

5. I walk for miles, every day. I love walking. Living rurally it is a joy to walk up the road and be in fields in minutes. I do about eight miles five days a week. It relaxes me like nothing else, sniffing in nature as I walk and losing myself in the greenery of it all.

6. Im hoping to do more work with the band now my co band members are less busy. I love to get up on stage and sing, it sends me somewhere glorious, and I know that when I want to, I can sing incredibly well.

7. I am facing the fact that my love of kink may have had a larger part to play in the dissolving of me and Mr Minx than I have cared to admit before. Our relationship was in trouble anyway, but the easy thing to do was get angry and blame someone else, but nobody is blameless in a relationship. all parts of a relationship have to work in order for people to be fulfilled, and denying that part of me would have made us both miserable in the long term.

8. Nursing has made me realise more than any other experience that life is very short, and you should do what you can when you can, and say what you want to say while you still have a voice, and while people are still around to listen.

9. I am losing the rage I always had at having such a fucked up childhood, as without it I may not have been lured into punk, reading Roald Dahl and reading my lonely childhood days away. I have become a bit of a weirdo, certainly, but as well as being insecure, an attention seeker, loud and opinionated, I also became independent, gained a deep intuition about others behaviour and embraced a whole gamut of 'alternative' things that have made me very fulfilled. I could have a house full of Level 42 records and think hoummus is 'out there' but I dont, and for that Im grateful.

10. I am the Tomb Raider QUEEN. You ask, I tell. You're never without Tomb Raider advice while Im around.

1. I have paid for the Nashville jolly up, my room plus the stash of spending money, entirely by trading in cds and selling some of my gratis skincare/cosmetics loot from work to my husband's co-workers. I am also close to having enough money to take care of the airfare for Florida via the same method.

2. The start of this fund last year also had birthday money from my Mom, $100. It was my New Orleans fund because I was assured that this year's jolly up of the Americas would be there. I'd already contributed some cd trade-in dollars to it to when I took the wad of cash and put it in a collection box for the Red Cross Katrina relief fund. Not quite $200, but certainly not the kind of money that is disposable to me.

3. Lately I've been having sex dreams that don't have to do with partners but with getting new pleasure toys.

4. I seem to attract straight girls who want to experiment.

5. In the brief time that I was reconsidering the idea of having children, and knowing I'd have to leave my marriage to do this, I decided that the idea situation for me would be co-parenting with one of my gay friends. At least two of them volunteered to be my baby's daddy, even though I wasn't asking.

6. The quantity of music I've brought home, mostly promos, that I've still not listened to would far exceed the quantity of cds some mortals would consider a sizable cd collection.

7. I have more love and forgiveness for my cat whose bite disfigured and hospitalized me than for the one who just fights with all the other animals and territorially pisses.

8. I enthusiastically took up knitting this year, though I'm just doing basic stuff. It has helped my rehabilitate my hand after last year's cat bite surgery.

9. Playing catch in the backyard is a new hobby as of the past month. At 41, I've just learned to throw the ball properly and am pretty proficient weilding my baseball glove. I love the popping sound of catching the ball in the right spot.

10. If I could have one physical thing changed about me, it wouldn't be larger firmer boobs, it wouldn't be a more feminine nose. It would be longer legs. I'd love to have gorgeous stems.

I had completely forgotten the original thread so thanks for redirecting me to it. Here's how things shape up now...

1. I've never owned a pair of Levis Still haven't
2. I've never owned a car with a V8 engine Have done. Bought and sold one in the past year. Lovely thing, ridiculous fuel consumption though
3. I've never been comfortable with the internet Still the case, sort of. I am comfortable with the internet and this place and all that, but I am still not comfortable with other friends knowing just how comfortable I am with it
4. I've never listened to Queen without laughing Still the case
5. I've never listened to Epic Soundracks without crying Still the case
6. I've never given a shit about anyone This has gone from so true to so completely untrue in a really short time. The fact that this has now been completely turned on its head forever, is joyous reason alone to revist this thread
7. I've never been content with the fact that I don't give a shit about anyone See above
8. I've never been in love See 6
9. I've never thought that Quentin Whatisname desreves any credit for ripping off other people's films and giving them a glitzy soundtrack Still the case
10. I've never felt so low. I have never been happier, nor more optimistic, nor more content. It is the most thrilling and exasperating time of my life and I love it. I am a changed man and there is even more change on the horizon which both scares me and excites the hell out of me

All in all quite a positive year then!
