Utterly predicatable, most influential claptrap.

Backslapping time. Well done us. We are fantastic.

Tis was a fun thread - it got a little sidetracked at the end though.

The final list was:

Revolver
Forever Changes
Village Green Preservation Society
The Queen Is Dead
Exile on Main Street
The Band
Astral Weeks
Trout Mask Replica
Are You Experienced?
The Velvet Underground and Nico
Blonde on Blonde
The Stone Roses
SF Sorrow
OK Computer
Odyssey and Oracle
A Love Supreme
What's Going On
Dark Side of the Moon
Innervisions
Sgt Pepper
Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Led Zeppelin IV
London Calling
Never Mind the Bollocks
Low
Fun House
Kick out the Jams
Loveless
Trans Europe Express
Pink Flag
Grace
Born to run
Let's get it on
Marquee Moon
Thriller
Sign o' the Times
It Takes a Nation of Millions...
Mago Tago
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Ram

Now, how many do you own?
And, what one album would you add now?
Also, of the list, which one would you remove?
Nicotine, valium, vicadin, marijuana, ecstasy, and alcohol -
Cocaine

I own them all. I think I like pretty well all of them too.

In fact that list looks uncannily like my CD list when I first fetched up on the shores of Mojo.

Dude, no Let's Get It On?! That's surreal, for a soul fan like yourself. You also need Fun House and Tago Mago.

How did Who's Next escape this list? That dull slab of stadia rock is almost always the automatic response of best Who/ best album ever queries.

I still find it amazing that most have a vast majority of the list.
How does that happen?

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Yes, but in 1974 they were wanking into a bucket with such aplomb.

I have 11 of the list. Only play 2 of them though.
The new torch song cover of Bo Rhap is awful, just as the song itself. I dislike Queen to the max. Bah.

I'd remove The Stone Roses - the record really isn't that good. And in its place would come either of the two Joy Division albums.

I have 'em all - and gladly. A fine list - not a bad place to start a collection.
Of course, I was mostly stoned at the time.

Take out Ram and Odyssey & Oracle. The latter is a fine LP, but it's nowhere near as influential as Music for Airports and Free Your Mind.

Better late than never, I 'spose...

Revolver
Forever Changes
Village Green Preservation Society
The Queen Is Dead
Exile on Main Street

The Band
Astral Weeks
Trout Mask Replica
Are You Experienced?
The Velvet Underground and Nico
Blonde on Blonde
The Stone Roses

SF Sorrow
OK Computer
Odyssey and Oracle
A Love Supreme
What's Going On
Dark Side of the Moon
Innervisions
Sgt Pepper /
Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Led Zeppelin IV
London Calling
Never Mind the Bollocks
Low
Fun House

Kick out the Jams
Loveless
Trans Europe Express
Pink Flag
Grace

Born to Run*
Let's get it on*
Marquee Moon
Thriller
Sign o' the Times
It Takes a Nation of Millions...
Tago Mago

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Ram

The ones in asterixes I own huges chunks of through best ofs and anthologies etc.

I'd say, if I were to remove two, it would be "Grace" and "Ram", and would replace it with one of the Byrds albums (anything from Mr Tambourine Man up to Notorious Byrd Brothers) and Endtroducing... by DJ Shadow (or Massive Attack's Blue Lines). Obviously that's more to do with my tastes, but I feel that my replacements are more influential and had a stronger impact on my tastes. Actually, there's only one jazz album on the list, there needs to be that other catchall one: Kind of Blue. Which, honestly, is the only record I can listen to in any situation.

As Balboa says, it's not a bad place to start a collection, and many of the ones I don't own I intend to get because they seem to be something I would enjoy. I've probably heard all of them with the exception of SF Sorrow and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

Edit: since this thread began, A Love Supreme and Let's Get it On have become two of my most-played, most-loved and in the context of what I listened to subsequently, most revelatory releases. I would be lost without them (so to speak).

What about Mingus Ah Um?- not just a canonical jazz LP, but with its aggression, cacaphony and downright swing, it would sit nicely along the rock releases, as an LP that may have even informed and challenged many of the artists mentioned

To confirm that Revolver's the best album ever.
