Dude, no Let's Get It On?! That's surreal, for a soul fan like yourself. You also need Fun House and Tago Mago.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

I'd remove The Stone Roses - the record really isn't that good. And in its place would come either of the two Joy Division albums.

The ones in asterixes I own huges chunks of through best ofs and anthologies etc.
I'd say, if I were to remove two, it would be "Grace" and "Ram", and would replace it with one of the Byrds albums (anything from Mr Tambourine Man up to Notorious Byrd Brothers) and Endtroducing... by DJ Shadow (or Massive Attack's Blue Lines). Obviously that's more to do with my tastes, but I feel that my replacements are more influential and had a stronger impact on my tastes. Actually, there's only one jazz album on the list, there needs to be that other catchall one: Kind of Blue. Which, honestly, is the only record I can listen to in any situation.
As Balboa says, it's not a bad place to start a collection, and many of the ones I don't own I intend to get because they seem to be something I would enjoy. I've probably heard all of them with the exception of SF Sorrow and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
Edit: since this thread began, A Love Supreme and Let's Get it On have become two of my most-played, most-loved and in the context of what I listened to subsequently, most revelatory releases. I would be lost without them (so to speak).
What about Mingus Ah Um?- not just a canonical jazz LP, but with its aggression, cacaphony and downright swing, it would sit nicely along the rock releases, as an LP that may have even informed and challenged many of the artists mentioned
