I heartily concur that the loveless' post was some of the best writing on Syd I've read. Here's a recent quote from Syd friend and photographer Mick Rock on meeting Syd backstage after an early Pink Floyd gig in 1966.

"Afterwards, Lindsay (Syd's girlfriend) took me backstage to meet Syd. I remember being introduced to her and was quite excited when she took up my invitation to indluge in a little smoke. She was very attractive. I soon found out she was Syd's girlfriend and I was maybe a little dissapointed but it boosted my opinion of Syd. Not only was he incredibly talented but he had this faboulas girlfriend. I remember telling Syd how attractive she was and him vigeroulsy nodding his assent. He was obviously very attracted to her. I last heard from her 20 years ago - she had married a banker and moved to New York.

Syd invited me to join him and his friends at a party in his mothers basement. He was all smiles, very positive, strong and clear eyed. He had an innocence and sweetness about him which was very engaging. I remember being impressed with how well he rolled a joint.

Syd and I talked about Arthur C Clarke's novel, Childhood End, in which there is a scene of children dancing like an acid vision. Syd recommended I read a novel by Robert A Heinlein called Starnger in a Strange Land. We talked about music and some of the painters he respected, like Modigliani. I had an amazing first connection with Syd. He was cheerful, open and talkative. He wasn't at all the Syd that later become less communicative with most people. He got on well with everybody"

There is a tendency of people that write about Syd to take the position that Syd was already a looney, undisciplined guy and the acid just made it worse. This is not true. By all accounts Syd was actually very togather prior to the summer of '67. He comes accross as a very intelligent, polite, well spoken lad in all of the Pink Floyd era interviews. Of course, there is no doubt that he went bonkers towards the end of the Floyd period but it's clear that he was fine until at least the middle of that year. Here's a quote from Syd in a 1971 Melody Maker interview where he talks about Pink Floyd.

SB - "There choice of material was very much to do with what they were thinking as architecture students. Rather unexciting people I would of thought, primarly, anyone walking into art school like that would of been tricked - maybe they were working their entry into art school"

Great post, Chris. I think there's a bit too much mythology surrounding Syd, and the knee-jerk "he was out of his head on acid 24/7" reactions from some don't help get closer to the truth of this rather tragic figure.

You gotta admit: that Bhoywonder gives GREAT diatribe.

He's in a race with Matt Wilson.

But true true entertainment when he is pissed.
I hate it when I miss it in real time and have to read it back again afterwards. It misses that frisson of excitement as you see he has made another post and you open it up to find another barely decipherable tirade against the offenders of his sensibilities.
You can sort of picture him slurping and typing one-handed simultaneously like some old Fleet Street hack at 5 minutes-to-deadline, all the time imagining himself some crusading dragonslayer type.
Wonderful.

Ah, this evening I defer to the real deal.

Apparently, I missed a great deal of fun on this thread tonight.

I DID play a blinding show, so all was not lost.

HOWEVER, bhoy, I do send you a page or two back to see the roots of the "dumbing down" of this thread. You were late, though your incessant posting at least demonstrates a longing for similar credentials.

Some HIGHLY insightful contributions on the last few pages of this thread.

(And let us never forget, Piper is not their best chillout record, like.)

Did you have fun?

No, my point was that the thread was at peak spoilage BEFORE you reared your drunken head.

You, at least, were impossible to ignore.
