Cool it, Feeb. Besides, any experiment is bound to have at least a 2% margin of error.

Big emphasis on "error" here.

As you know, I love Syd. It's just the rest of them that spoil thi srecord. yo uthink it's going ok, then some twat has suggested somne stupid pretentious acid shift, and they all go, cause it'll be fuckin cosfuckinmic, and it isn't, it's just crap. Take a shed load of acid, nearly go mad, and you'll see I'm right. It's fucking shite.

The importance of acid to the creation of this record imay be overestimated. I've heard that the Floyd were pretty straight when they were making this, though they may have been dabbling in things around this time. Syd's swift acid-induced decline came after this was recorded.

To me, it doesn't sound like the work of drug-takers. It may be enjoyable to listeners who are on it, but the playing and the ideas all sound relatively straight and "67" to me.

That's actually historically correct, Jim. Good point.

However, many great albums have been made on ergot-derivatives like LSD, mescaline et al. They are almost always a lot stranger than Piper: the first two Thirteenth Floor Elevators albums, Red Krayola's Parable of Arable Land, Funkadelic's Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow, Amon Duul II's Yeti... to name just a few that I have read were recorded while tripping.
You'd pay big bucks to know what you really think.

And they weren't any good either.

But it's nbot whether they were recorded under the influence of acid or not that's the point. It;s missing the point of acid, maybe. What it is, to me, is the sound of people who have experienced things through acid but have no way of grounding these experiences. For example, good morning good morning is clearly an acid song, but it's rooted in the real world, if you like. The best thing any drug, and especially acid, can do is to help you understad the world in which you live, to undertsand the nature of your race, your species and your environment. At best, it shows you the possibilities, but you can't explore them conclusively through recreational narcotics, however much fun they can be. So what you need to do wth any drug experience is to figure how you can import the positives into your life ona long-term, reasonable basis. What Piper does, however, is take the posh student approach. the approach which has no grounding in the real world, becuase the real world has never been an issue anyway. It's a bit like Pulp's common people. There are chnges in Piper tha shouldn't be there, that have no reason to exist, that offer nothing othr than a text for people to comment on, a device invented entirely to wow yet without roots. It;s a rubbish record. Just shit.
