I might have been tempted to nominate something by him, but I've never seen any of his 80s work (and it's beginning to look as though I never will unless I buy the DVDs).

What do you mean? His films are all availiable on the internet, even in HD nowadays.

Trust me, The Sacrifice in particular is a must-see.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to seeing that one.

I'm not one for watching movies on the computer, is the thing.

Other than Spinal Tap, I think I actively dislike the entire top 5.

Nice to see Blue Velvet at number one. It's a masterpiece.

It's the "Trans Europe Express" of cinema. I'm going to have to hear it proclaimed as a masterpiece my whole life. Ugh.

I hate watching films in my computer too. What I do nowadays is that I download them and copy them to my external hard-drive, which I then plug onto my blu-ray player. Then I can watch them like I watch any DVD/BD.

What I used to do when I did not have HD technology was that I used to burn them to DVDs, too. I have a pretty big collection of copied DVDs at my place gathering dust. :)

Better than Spinal Tap or Withnail.

Perhaps we've grown up.
One night, an evil spirit held me down
I could not make one single sound
Jah told me, 'Son, use the word'
And now I'm as free as a bird

Shocking that I was the only one who voted for the Evil Dead movies, truly a black mark against the BCB community...

Koyaanisqatsi (Godfrey Reggio, 1982) - 2 votes – 14 points (never/ever (9), Polishgirl (5),

Totally forgot that, and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

Not that my vote would have made a difference, and I am suprised Betty Blue didn't garner more votes, I was thinking top 20 at least

But Revenge of the Nerds 1 vote, call yourselves movie buffs pfft.

Well, I considered including both in mine, but I found 25 better films in the end. :)

Yes, but only two from the 80s. :)

Prizzi's Honor (John Huston, 1985) – 1 votes - 5 points (GoogaMooga (5),

Disappointing, but expected. Too narrow choices.
1966 and all that

Happy with the top 5 - I voted for four of them, and the other one was on my longlist. Blue Velvet is one of the best films of the decade, an elusive film that seems richer and stranger the more you watch it.

I agree the list needs some Tarkovsky, The Sacrifice is spectacular.

Well the 70's are surely when Tarkovsky will shine - Mirror and Stalker are two of the best movies ever made.

15 of my choices made the top 50 - and about 6 were in the top 10.

I think it's a good list - it reflects the inherently musical/anglophone tastes of the board and also the fact that for many of the voters, the 80's were a time when many of us were experiencing cinema properly for the first time.

Had you voted for Koyaanisqatsi and given it more than 5 points, it would have been in. :(

Nice list! Cheers for the efforts and the suspense-building, algroth!

The problem is that his vote could be split heavily, as he also directed Solaris in the 70s; all three films could get votes but not enough to make the top fifty.

I'd be surprised if Stalker didn't get a showing.
