BCB's Top Films of the '80s poll (FULL RESULTS).

Postby algroth » 04 Jul 2012, 18:34

Following on Aaron's great work for the 90s film poll, here's a the new entry to this ongoing series, this time related to the decade of the 80s. The rules are as usual, one compiles a list of 25 (TWENTY-FIVE) films, with 125 points split between them as the user so wishes, and sends them to me via PM. I'll compile them and post the final list here once the poll is closed. Please include respective directors and years of release in your list.

As last time, this is a poll related to feature films only, fiction or documentary, released from 1980 to 1989. To avoid confusions on this matter we are using the release year as listed on IMDb.

Without further due, the results:

If I'd done this in 1991 it would be easy but movies prior to the 90's have dated and the pickings looking through a 2012 glass get slimmer & slimmer. I had a look at this a couple of months ago & could see a struggle to get 25.

If you have some lists to serve as prompts that would be helpful.

And thanks for continuing the series. I've found these polls very enjoyable.

I didn't see "Ernest Goes to Camp" on the list so I don't know if it can be taken very seriously.

It doesn't seem a serious list at all does it? Not because of the absence of Ernest movies though.

16, 31, 42, 52, 72,83, 87. 43 is by far the best film on that list. Before the Cohen brothers started disappearing up their own arses and working with George 'fucking' Clooney.

And more to the point, the Coens have made some excellent films since their first with Clooney- particularly A Serious Man, True Grit and No Country for Old Men. Of their work with Clooney, I really enjoyed Oh Brother, Where Art Thou, thought Intolerable Cruelty was flat and Burn After Reading largely got by on its energy but was a bit messy.

I agree that Blood Simple was a great debut, tho. In many ways, it laid down much of the DNA for the Coens' subsequent work- right down to the twisty, noirish plot and bizarre incidental characters.

Pretty much every film on that list is worth seeing, even if I don't necessarily like them all, if that makes sense.

Oh, and cheers for setting this up, algroth!

I've seen Soderbergh's Solaris, it was shit. I've also seen Syriana, Good Night and Good Luck, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Three Kings, Ocean's Eleven and Michael Clayton, and all those are either good or excellent (particularly the first two).

Moonstruck embodies everything I hate. Quirky New York family whose members who have endearingly retained some of their cultural identity, it's also a romcom and it's cast includes Nicholas Cage and fucking Cher. But I really like it. I'm feeling kinda vulnerable about this.

Finished my list but can't remember if we need to include the director and year of release.

Funny decade for film from the perspective of 2012.
Pretty strong early on but quickly moves to largely frivolous and strictly entertainment around 84 or so. The decade's later attempts at serious/artistic cinema seem overly earnest and...lacking.
Can't for the life of me imagine suffering through say Platoon or Do The Right Thing today.
It's like film makers in the '80s, consciously or not, refuted, other than a few exceptions, the more substantial cinema of the 70s. (Although you can also argue that began once the Jaws, Star Wars type blockbusters arrived on scene mid decade.)
Other thoughts on '80s movies:
Having looked through several lists this morning to refresh my memory, I'm surprised at how...uneventful the '80s were movie wise. Plenty of stories, blockbusters and all for sure, but few truly worthwhile films. Was surprised to see how many movies I liked at the time but have me wondering what the world I was thinking now.
(Though, think movies overall are worse now for whatever that's worth.)
All the same, I had no problem coming up with 25 movies, had to trim a bit actually. There are plenty of '80s films I like, both then and now, but few I'd rank truly great.
Which is to say, light weight popcorn fare makes up the bulk of my list, a few exceptions aside.
Sweet potato ya got it, apple ya ain't.
