True.

You could almost do a poll for each individual year of the 70s.

At the very least - we should consider compiling a longer list.

We'll have to see about that. I think all decades should be played with the same rules, but if enough people want to submit 50 instead of 25, I guess we'll go that way then.

True.

I'm not sure that's the case really. There isn't the huge qualitive difference people think.*

The main difference will be in the way people vote. There was a lot of voting going for sentimental childhood/early teen favourites in the 80's poll. Those kind of films will be much less in evidence in the 70's one because Hollywood didn't aggressively target that demographic to anything like the same degree. The post-Star Wars effect didn't kick in properly until the 80's.

* I should say the seventies is probably my favourite film decade however.

Stick to 25. If you go to 50 you'll just see far less people voting.

We had more people voting for the 80s than any other decade so far. Perhaps 'll stick to 25 simply to keep the consistency too.

As for favorite decades, the 60s were just as strong.

First of all thanks algroth for doing this. I have really enjoyed this one and though I've never been a fan of Withnail and I or Blue Velvet I can see why they're rated so high. However the omission of The Long Good Friday is a disgrace. For what is worth here's my selection all given 5 points 'cause I couldn't be arsed to distribute points.

1. Scarface (1983) Brian De Palma
2. The Long Good Friday (1980) John Mackenzie
3. Bladerunner (1982) Ridley Scott
4. Aliens (1986) James Cameron
5. This Is Spinal Tap (1984) Rob Reiner
6. Platoon (1986) Oliver Stone
7. The Shining (1980) Stanley Kubrick
8. Videodrome (1983) David Cronenberg
9. The Killing Fields (1984) Roland Joffé
10. The Terminator (1984) James Cameron
11. Full Metal Jacket (1987) Stanley Kubrick
12. Top Secret (1984) Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker
13. Cinema Paradiso (1988) Giuseppe Tornatore
14. Robocop (1987) Paul Verhoeven
15. The Untouchables (1987) Brian De Palma
16. Mississippi Burning (1988) Alan Parker
17. The Wall (1982) Alan Parker
18. The Killer (1989) John Woo
19. War Of The Roses (1989) Danny De Vito
20. Das Boot (1981) Wolfgang Petersen
21. Excalibur (1981) John Boorman
22. Down By Law (1986) Jim Jarmusch
23. A Fish Called Wanda (1988) Charles Crichton
24. Dead Poets Society (1989) Peter Weir
25. The Blues Brothers (1980) John Landis
I run out of talent

I know I'll struggle to get 25 in the 70's. Each decade as we go back has less to offer, not more. Stick to 25.

Yeah - I understand keeping it the same as all the previous lists, but I have a feeling it's going to have very few surprises. Ah well!

Here's my list, quite a few made it in but that's no surprise as my tastes are generally in synch with the BCB-norm. Yeah, I gave "Raging Bull" 10 points. I don't think I rated anything higher, I think it tied with a few others.
Anyway, I thought I'd take a stab at defending it even though it did pretty well.

You ever see "I Want to Live" with Susan Hayward? I love it. Susan Hayward goes to the electric chair and by the time she does, you've either stopped watching or you're sitting in the electric chair with her.

well, I think Raging Bull is like that. yeah, Jake is a dick. But... you either stop watching or you get under his skin by the end. I think this is achieved through remarkable performances and behind the camera craft.

the cameras are flashing at US. WE are getting punched in the face. Our effin' mother effin sucks elephant dicks. I think it's just a mind boggling film. I think Marty Baby and his cast are totally cooking with gas on that one.

I think it's a lot like Sid and Nancy. the movie isn't about why. the movie is about the events. I think it's a brisk and energizing film.

Re the '70s poll: please prod me to vote. I've meant to vote in all the others and just forgotten, and ended up looking at the lists wishing I'd voted for this or that. I remember the '70s being the best-represented decade in my last "BCB Favourite Films" list, so I shouldn't have any trouble putting together a list focusing on that decade. As long as someone reminds me!

Did you ever see the Christopher Nolan film Memento?
The main character was investigating a murder, but he had amnesia. So very cleverly, every time he discovered a clue he'd tattoo it on himself so he couldn't ever forget.
I recall it was a very effective system for him, so you might consider "Algroth's 70's film poll" on the side of your neck.Maybe you could drape the phrase around an anchor to make it more picturesque.

I wholeheartedly second this idea. :D

Though, sure, I'll send you a PM when I open the poll. I might be doing so in the following week or two.

I saw Raging Bull once when VHS had come to dominate the market and rental shops were sproiuting up - and once a couple of weeks ago (after the poll was over).

CFB gets it pretty right above, I think. The character's unlikeable, but there's more to it than that. It's really well done.

And yeah, I Want to Live was great!

It looks like these were my choices, all five points each.

1. Blue Velvet (David Lynch)
2. Blade Runner (Ridley Scott)
3. Fitzcarraldo (Werner Herzog)
4. Brazil (Terry Gilliam)
5. This is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner)
6. Withnail and I (Bruce Robinson)
7. Stranger than Paradise (Jim Jarmusch)
8. Gallipoli (Peter Weir)
9. The Long Good Friday (John McKenzie)
10. My Dinner with Andre (Louis Malle)
11. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (Robert Zemekis)
12. Missing (Costa Gavras)
13. Let’s Get Lost (Bruce Weber)
14. Robocop (Paul Verhoeven)
15. Tampopo (Juzo Itami)
16. River’s Edge (Tim Hunter)
17. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (John McNaughton)
18. Coup de Torchon (Clean Slate) (Bertrand Tavernier)
19. Roger and Me (Michael Moore)
20. National Lampoon’s Vacation (Harold Ramis)
21. Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (Tim Burton)
22. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Amy Heckerling)
23. Polyester (John Waters)
24. Caddyshack (Harold Ramis)
25. Christiane F. (Ulrich Edel)

Can't imagine why I didn't vote in this, other than having too much stuff going on at the time. Wish we could revisit some of these polls.
