June 14th:

1977
The Rejects
999
The Railway Hotel, Putney

1980
The Form
KHz
The Trafalgar, Shepherd's Bush

Ollie was some sort of celebrity in 77, or at least liked to think so. He was featured in some magazine in "punk persona" fashion, then came out with this band. They were predictably bollocks. Oh, by the way, I'm talking about the Rejects.

As opposed to The Form, obviously......

Oh, by the way, the Swedes here are fairly exultant.

June 15th:

1973
Andy Roberts
Kingdom Come
The Rainbow, Finsbury Park

1984
Blank Generation
Brunel University

Andy Roberts was ex-Liverpool Scene, and a sometime member of Grimms, about which later. This was about as big as it got for Arthur Brown, headlining The Rainbow, but by this time, Kingdom Come were in terminal decline.

This was the Blanks before I joined them........

Lovin' this thread Pete, and your continued devotion while on 'olidays is admirable stuff. Keep at it please!

Flamin Groovies and Radio Birdman in Sheffield hey, I interviewed Deniz Tek once and asked him about those final UK shows, he mentioned the Sheffield show as a fond memory. He is a pretty cool guy, my mate Lizzie reckons Deniz is the only bloke she'd ever have children with...but i digress.

June 16th:

1974
Blue
The Winning Post, Whitton

1978
The Ekoes
Blunt Instrument
The White Lion, Putney

1991
The Brideswell Taxis
Buzzcocks
The Town & Country, Kentish Town

Blue is, naturally enough, not the boy band of recent times, but Hugh Nicholson's ensemble after he'd try to turn Marmalade into a respectably "heavy"-ish band. I remember getting one of those flexi discs from Sounds or some such.

The Ekoes is, of course, myself inmy proto-London-Dock-Beat phase. Not recommended....

This was Buzzcocks revival, and fine it was too. Since been attempted several times, however.

I had a trauma a few nights ago, when I thought I'd mislaid my notes for this little exercise. Mrs. the Pick thought you ought to know.....about the bottom lip quivering that was NOT Ouzo induced....

Nowt to report for June 17th.

June 18th:

1976
The Smiggs Blues Band
The White Bear, Hounslow

And this was hardly worth the wait. Slow few days, obviously.

The Greeks are looking forward to a potential mix-up with England in the next round......

June 19th:

1976
Montana Red
The White Bear, Hounslow

1986
Psychedelic Furs
The Mean Fiddler, Harlesden

Montana Red, I've probably dealt with before. Journeymen Rock'n'roll stuff before the shit hit the fan.

The Furs? It was too crowded to see them, and I was so drunk that night I can't even remember. Good times in Harlesden? Unbelievable but true!

Now tonight's football is over (well done the Czechs), Costas has put on a video of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Shit, it's Voodoo Chile right now, best I get to the square for a bit of last night revelry.......

Hunter Musket
Al Stewart
The Boathouse, Kew

1977
999
The Saints
The Nashville, West Kensington

1981
The Giants
Calling Hearts
The 101 Club, Clapham

A low key acoustic set at the Folk Club at Kew Boathouse.

Aussies come to town at The Nashville.

A couple of unknowns at Clapham.

It's bloody cold here, innit?

Indeed it was, Shelley could barely hide his disdain for Diggle and openly laughed at him throughout his "songs". I saw them several times on that tour, but the Trade Union Club in Reading was the best because it was the closest they came to actually having a punch-up on stage.

Sorry Pete, I won't disrupt your thread any more.

Don't start!

June 22nd:

1972
JSD Band
Sunshine
BBC Paris Studio, Lower Regent's Street

The JSD Band were a bunch of Scots (real ones) that appealed to my folk-rock, jig-a-jig side, which had been woken by early Lindisfarne gigs. We just liked to leap about a bit, and they always did the job. Recorded a couple of albums, and of course John Peel championed them to a large extent, but I never actually bought anything by them. They were good lads to chat to in the pub, and we did. I used to wear a JSD Band sticker on the back of my Harry Fenton's Medium, which was a black plastic (leather-looking, of course) jacket which really started to look worse for wear once it started fraying at the edges! I think Sledgey remembers this....

Never heard of Sunshine again, though. If I remember right, they were fronted by a couple of girlies, doing, as you might expect, souly, reggae-tinged stuff. But of course, I may be completely mistaken here. They weren't Heavy Metal, that's for sure!

June 23rd:

1974
JSD Band
The Winning Post, Whitton

1979
The Decorators
Pinpoint
The Nashville, West Kensington

1989
The Trudy
The Greyhound, Fulham

Oh! It's Groundhog Day. Seems like only yesterday I was writing about the JSD Band!

The Decorators were a bunch that trod the same boards as my lot. I found a single by them a year or two back, "Pendulum & Swinge". Had a guy on saxophone called, er, Joe Sax, and when The Form split up, I almost negotiated some recording with him, and Huw Griffiths, who was Arturo's drummer in Pinpoint. Sadly, nothing came of it.

The Decorators a few years later...

June 24th:

1971
Southern Comfort
Lindisfarne
BBC Paris Studio, Lower Regent's Street

This was the Southern Comfort of "Woodstock" fame the previous year, but, without Ian Matthews, weren't exactly that inspiring. Lindisfarne, however, were. My ears were opened to the wonderful "Lady Eleanor" for the first time, and I was hooked. Add to that the join-in revelry of "We Can Swing Together" and "Fog On The Tyne" (mercifully, many decades before the ill-faited association with one stupid twat of a footballer), plus solo songs from Alan Hull, and you've got a winner in the genre. They will have a lot more entries in this calendar!

I was there too. I seem to remember one of the hairy Geordies lugging a case of Newcastle Brown Ale on to the stage, which was made liberal use of during the evening. Fantastic performance from a great band.

June 29th:

1972
The Jeff Beck Group
BBC Paris Studio, Lower Regent's Street

1974
G.T. Moore & His Reggae Guitars
Kevin Coyne
Gong
Streetwalkers
Nico
Kevin Ayers
HydePark

2004
The Leah Wood Band
The Eel Pie Club @ The Cabbage Patch, Twickenham

For the life of me, it should have been momentous, but I cannot tell you who the hell was in Jeff Beck's band. Maybe I got too smashed in The Captain's Cabin, which was the nearest hostelry.

The Hyde Park thing I went to primarily for the Streetwalkers gig, as that was Chapman & Whitney from Family. Then again, Kevin Ayers was doing his Dr. Dream stuff, and you didn't know who would show for that. I'm fairly certain Gilmour was there.

Finally, yes, this was actually tonight! Ronnie Wood's daughter Leah giving out some retro funk-rock. Actually, some of the material wouldn't have gone amiss with someone like Maggie Bell giving it loads, but generally it was OK. I'm afraid she's going to have to dress like Kylie, and adopt a Latin surname top make it obviously. After her, an intermission, and the dinosaurs have landed: announced as a Wood family reunion, you almost know what to expect. A couple of Downliners Sect folk, Keith Grant aka Lurch on bass, and Don Craine on rhythm - mercifully without his perennial deerstalker, else I would have taken him out there and then - Art Wood on vocals, and some geezer still sporting a Rod Stewart mullet on drums. Ray Majors is billed as ex-Mott, though not any Mott I saw, or heard of, but he at least knew how to play guitar, and of course after a couple of Hoochie Coochie Man covers, our Ron takes the stage. Unfortunately, his guitar has no power, or raunch, shall we say, so he contributes a few weedy lead lines, then opts for the more subtle rhythm duel with the tosser from Downliners Sect. Needless to say, everyone in the room loved it. Anyway, I've got an Eel Pie Club T-shirt for my mate Pete in Den Haag, who's a Stones freak, and we're visiting him next week, so it wasn't a waste......
