The English and God

Postby Davey the Fat Boy » 18 Oct 2011, 20:33

Since the thread about America has devolved into therapy for Duncan, I thought I'd ask a question that keeps gnawing away at me.

It is pretty obvious that the folks on the board most dismissive (and really outright vitriolic) about religion are from the UK. There are exceptions, but for the most part I think the pattern is clear. So given this...what is it that the church of England has done to you? If it is true that UK politics and cultural life are relatively free of religion - at least as compared to the US, why are you so much angrier about it?

I've often wondered the same.

Though just for the record, I believe Duncan (aka Wilson) is actually Canadian.

Inconsequential. None of those people have any thoughts worth considering.

That would explain a lot.

Why not ask why they're dismissive (and really outright vitriolic) about everything else, why just God?

Well at least I understand that POV. But that does not seem to be an argument against religion itself. If the majority of Palestinians are Muslim, how do you feel about their religion?

I don't think we are necessarilly. On this board at least it's more of a science v religion thing.

That is just how it always plays out because science is the tool that the board's Atheist brigade chooses to try and wield in order to nullify religion. There is no anti-science constituency here.

But you don't see a strong UK streak of religious anger here? I could certainly be wrong, as i don't even know for sure who lives where, but it seems to be the case. But even if you extend it beyond BCB you've got Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins making a kind of cottage industry of religious anger (I've no idea where Sam Harris is from) . So my question to you is...why? Weren't you the one who said on the other thread that the UK is a lot less involved in religion overall? If so, what is the impetus for the likes of Richard Dawkins?

Fair enough. But not because of Zionism I assume.

Because their espousal of religion obscures their natural claim to justice. But we derail.

Well you had Tony Blair putting a lot of money into faith schools, Islamic fundamentalism becoming more visible, to some degree these are responses to these things..but generally I agree it's a bit strange how atheism has suddenly become a big talking point.

I've known a few christians as friends but I'm pretty uncomfortable with it if I'm honest although I try not to offend them or anything. I don't think I could go out with someone who was heavily involved with the church.

Dawkins disagrees with religion and he's angry? Bollocks, he's too fucking polite if anything.
