The Stooges - The Stooges (6)
Safe As Milk - Captain Beefheart (6)

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (5)
Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking (5)
The Shangri-Las '65 - The Shangri-Las (5)

Didn't The Beatles come 2nd with 16 votes? And Liege & Lief 20th with 8. You also seem to have multiple listings for 'On The Threshold Of Dream'.

Manos Hadjidakis' Gioconda's Smile is excellent! It's traditional Greek music, I think (I'm honestly not an expert on traditional Greek music so I wouldn't know, but it has that kind of feel to it), made as a soundtrack I believe. "Portrait Of My Mother" and "The Concerto" particularly stand out. Not a top 20 for me, but probably a top 50.

I wouldn't call it traditional music by any stretch, it's more a crossover or chamber pop and folk and is completely instrumental. It was recorded in New York around the time he made the soundtrack for America, America which is a bit similar but not quite as good. The mood is extremely melancholic and though Neige complained that it's too sugary (which I cannot deny) this is his style. It's really evocative stuff in my opinion. Here's the standout track:

To Axion Esti is probably the most complete artistic statement in the history of Greek music. Recorded in 1963 or 1964 this is the musical interpretation of a complete poetic cycle by Odysseas Elytis (it was his idea for the project) which later won Nobel Prize for literature for it. It is divided in three parts and is a blend of orchestral/byzantine music, spoken poetry and rembetiko/folk. It shouldn't be very popular but it became one of the best selling Greek albums. Hard to pick a standout track which will be truly representative of the album. Here is one that combines most elements of the album:

Omorfi Poli by Hadzidakis is the wrong title as I realized. The correct title of the album is Odos Oniron (which means Street Of Dreams.) It was the music of a theatric play of 1962/3 (Theodorakis had a similar album released at the time called Omorfi Poli and that play was famously played at the theatre the other side of the street and had the basis of the music of Zorba The Greek). This album has the staple of Hadzidakis work which the lush, melancholic mood albeit adjusted with theatrical tunes. Perhaps his most celebrated work in Greece as much for sentimental reasons as for the actual value of the music. that era is considered the highpoint of modern Greek culture. Here is the standout track

Politia by Theodorakis is a collection of folk/rembetiko songs or rather the rembetiko rendition of contemporary and older poems which was how his first albums worked. It does not have any grand concept like the previous two albums but contains the most enduring songs of the era. Here is one of the standout tracks:

Thanks Kaspar. I enjoyed all of those. I would say the first piece was the one I liked best. I really would like to hear more of that, and will check it out.
