I was quite surprised by that myself - as it's pretty clear to see, the Miles vote did get spread around a fair bit, but BB is usually much higher on most lists of this kind. A backlash of some sort, or just a broadening of tastes...?

Neither was my case. It's a great album, and I had it on a long list, but there were simply enough albums which I'd rank above it to not have it in my list - or any Miles, for that matter.

I'm offended by the placement of BB in relation to On The Corner.
This can only be remedied by Monk on Blue Note placing Number 1.

If I hadn't kept myself from considering Monk's Blue Note stuff as constituting 'an album', it would have at least gotten closer to placing as #1. Mea culpa. Please don't excommunicate me.

I only have 42 of the top 50, I'd better go shopping.

This has been an object lesson in how to conduct and present one of these polls. Well done Fangedango and thanks very much for all the hard work.

I'm surprised and pleased to see Monk's Music so high in the list. It's not an album that gets a lot of publicity and I thought I might be the only one here who loved it so much. I'm also pleased to see that at least one other person knows Archie Shepp's Fire Music. It didn't make the top 50 but if you don't know it and you like Impulse era Coltrane (and who doesn't!) check it out.

I'm staggered that I'm the only person to vote for the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert. Surely that's an absolute classic ? And I thought there'd be more love for David Murray. But maybe he's too modern. There isn't much (anything?) in the list after the 60s.

But what a lot of good music there is in there......

Man, Jeff, if you had taken a couple of minutes outta your day to drop me even a short list, you could be happily squabbling your brains out right now... ;)

Thanks to all you guys who contributed, and I had a ball doing the poll, an absolute ball. I only know about 60% of the final 50 very well, let alone the full voting list, so the tallying has given me a host of new stuff to look into, and is probably gonna be keeping me busy for years to come. :)

I know we all might have a small gripe about a fave artist or album not being represented well enough, but i challenge anyone to look at that list and try to tell me that that ain't several days worth of smoking listening right there.

Nope, not the wrong ones. The first one would've made a top 50 of mine.

My idea of jazz does not tally with the BCB idea of jazz as this poll shows my voting would have been pointless

Firsty, great work Fangedango. A lot of effort has gone into this and it is brilliantly executed. Thank you.

Secondly, it's a great list. I have 46 of the 50 - time to get the other 4.

Jarrett - Koln seems to be the oldest album of the list from 1975. So nothing from the last 36 years. I'm guessing the Armstrong is the earliest.

With nearly 600 albums chosen I'm surprised that I'm the only one who chose a Charles Lloyd album.

:D

Coltrane had 15 selections on the long list
Miles had 14
Mingus 9

But Jarrett was only voted for 9 times spread across 6 albums

My own choices:

1. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
2. Keith Jarrett - The Complete Live At The Blue Note
3. Charles Mingus - Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
4. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
5. Charles Mingus - Ah Um
6. Keith Jarrett - Koln
7. Miles Davis - Complete Live At The Plugged Nickel
8. Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
9. Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners
10. John Coltrane - Giant Steps
11. Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch
12. Cannonball Adderley - Somethin Else
13. Dave Brubeck - Time Out
14. Art Blakey - Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk
15. Lee Morgan - Live At The Lighthouse
16. The Necks - Drive By
17. Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
18. Charles Mingus - Blues and Roots
19. Tomasz Stanko - Soul of Things
20. Charles Lloyd - Sangam

I've got a shitty connection for the minute, but a few observations...

1. Great job Fangedango! This is my favourite poll so far....

2. I think I have all 50 of the top 50, which surprised me a little bit. I don't know, sometimes I still feel like I have so many jazz things to hear and buy! And it is a great list. I could load up the ipod with just these albums and be very, very happy indeed. Plenty of 'out' stuff to enjoy, alongside some classic hard bop, spiritual jazz, solo piano, bop, big band.....well done BCB!

3. 'Giant Steps' in the Top 10? Well I never! I like it a lot, but it wouldn't make my top 5 Coltrane albums. Having said that, I haven't listened to it for years.

4. 'Go' at number 12? I never knew it was so popular - I've still yet to get my head round Dexter Gordon.

5. I was sure that McCoy Tyner's 'Extensions' was going to make it; looks like only Nev and myself voted for it.

6. It's really interesting to see who else placed the same albums as high as yourself - some patterns do start to emerge.

7. I can't argue with 'A Love Supreme' being number one, I mean, it is a rare case of something living up to the hype..

8. No Alice Coltrane? Shame on you BCB! (Actually the vote was split 3 ways - we should have co-ordinated).

9. I thought 'Out to Lunch' was more popular than it is - lots of votes, but mostly around the middle of peoples' lists. It was my number 1, and I thought it would make more peoples' Top 3. I was wrong.

10. Baron, I thought long and hard about the Johnny Hartman record - it is a complete favourite of mine, but figured it was a little less jazz and a little more vocal. I kinda wish I had put it in my list now.

11. I knew Six String would be the only one voting for 'Basra'! I just couldn't get it in the Top 20, it made Top 30 though.

12. 'Monk's Music' above 'Brilliant Corners'? Now you have me thinking.

13. 'The Complete Voting List' is fucking brilliant - you could do a lot worse than use that as a guide. There are a few things on there I will pick up.

14. I know there probably isn't enough interest, but it would be fascinating to see this for just the last 10 years of jazz.

I could keep going all day with this - I'm going to come back and post more.

My list -

1. Out to Lunch - Eric Dolphy
2. Genius of Modern Music Vol 2 - Thelonious Monk
3. Conference of the Birds - Dave Holland
4. The Jewel in the Lotus - Bennie Maupin
5. Point of Departure - Andrew Hill
6. Black Saint and the Sinner Lady - Charles Mingus
7. Karma - Pharaoh Sanders
8. Extensions - McCoy Tyner
9. Search for the New Land - Lee Morgan
10. Mike Westbrook’s Love Songs - The Mike Westbrook Concert Band
11. Dialogue - Bobby Hutcherson
12. Journey in Satchindananda - Alice Coltrane
13. Unity - Larry Young
14. Windmill Tilter - Ken Wheeler and the John Dankworth Orchestra
15. Anthony Braxton - Anthony Braxton
16. La Scala - Keith Jarrett
17. Another Workout - Hank Mobley
18. Mike Taylor Remembered
19. Harlem Bush Music - Taifa - Gary Bartz NTU Troop
20. The Freedom Book - Booker Ervin

Oh, and I should have placed 'Zawinul' higher - he would have had a shot at the Top 50.
Of course, I was mostly stoned at the time.
