What makes this a great Basie album is the presence of Neal Hefti. Most people know him best for his soundtrack compositions (he wrote the Batman theme and the music for The Odd Couple movie and TV show), but earlier he was one of the great songwriter/ arrangers of jazz, working first with Woody Herman and then with Basie.

The tracks on Atomic are mostly written and all arranged by Hefti. Basie loved the sound of the music, which was more of an ensemble-based "show band" sound, and worked with Hefti for years.

There are some Basie records that I actually think are better, but they're all compilations or collections. I think Atomic (which was originally titled E=MC²=Count Basie Orchestra+Neal Hefti Arrangements) is his best "stand alone" album.
You'd pay big bucks to know what you really think.

OK this is the right dude.....wow. Heavy shit coming down! Man, the fuzz is phenomenal! So where do I start here?

This album goes right on the wanted-list! Love Jon Hassell and this is not far removed from it.

The Mazurek clip is a bit heavy. There is usually a bit more space on his albums. Start with Sound Is.

With Henriksen any of Cartography, Chiaroscuro or Strjon are worth investigating.

Another album I think you'd like is I Heart Lung - Interoceans

You'll need to forward to the 6 minute mark or so for the jazzier stuff to start

I feel left out of the party so even though I didn't contribute to the actual poll, here's my list anyway. Keep in mind, I'm still pretty much a jazz novice but the albums I chose I like and listen to frequently.

Charles Mingus – Mingus Ah Um
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Thelonious Monk – Genius Of Modern Music, Vols. 1 & 2
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots
Art Ensemble of Chicago - Fanfare For the Warriors
The Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency!
Bill Evans Trio - Waltz For Debby
Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages
Archie Shepp - Fire Music
Last Exit - Last Exit
Miles Davis - Jack Johnson
Jimmy Smith - Back At the Chicken Shack
Art Ensemble of Chicago and Brigitte Fontaine - Comme A La
The Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame
Charles Mingus – The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady
Herbie Hancock - Blow-Up soundtrack
Pharoah Sanders - Karma
Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue

I went against my own personal rule of not choosing more than one album per artist but I don't have a lot of jazz in my collection to select from.

this is a pretty tasteful and genteel list,

mostly 50's and 60's, nothing current

if this were rock list there would be much gnashing of teeth
It's kinda depressing for a music forum to be proud of not knowing musicians.

I would have had that near the very top if I had bothered to participate. WIsh I had now.

To tie a couple of things together...namely my Mal Waldron suggestions and the love that Jackie McLean is getting lately...there is this....

A couple of observations about everything here.

First off, thanks to ange for suggesting the poll and crunching the numbers.
2. Like Balboa with jazz vocals, I couldn't honestly put any jazz pre 1950 on my list of top twenty because that wouldn't be true. I have a little bit of Ellington and Basie but most of it is early 50s. The only Louis Armstrong I have is w/the Duke and another with Ella. I think about getting some of his early stuff from time to time but I haven't done it yet.
3. I like jazz vocals but I have twenty or thirty albums representing that field and though I really like them I couldn't put them in my top twenty.
4. If this list had been built in the early 90s it would have been a different list. I might have had some avant garde stuff in there but I don't listen to it as much now so again it wouldn't be honest to put them on the list.
5. The list is not real surprising but the individual lists are. That's where the meat is I think except for people begining their jazz journey.

I've got their stuff from the late 50s together, hook, but not that one. Is it an lp or cd?

Here's my twenty. A fair bunch of Brit jazz classics from the 60s/70s, a few modern bits and pieces. There's plenty in the big list that I haven't explored at all yet, including Blue Note, Ellington and Monk. However I have been sort of concentrating on the Brit stuff in part because this stuff goes oop, whereas the US giants don't.

1) Miles Davis : Kind Of Blue
2) Mike Westbrook : Love Songs
3) Anouar Brahem : Thimar
4) Ken Wheeler : Windmill Tilter
5) Miles Davis : Sketches Of Spain
6) Tubby Hayes : Mexican Green
7) Tord Gustavsen Trio : The Ground
8) Charles Mingus : Ah Um
9) Portico Quartet : Knee-Deep In The North Sea
10) George Gershwin : Rhapsody In Blue
11) Thomasz Stanko Quartet : Suspended Night
12) John Surman : John Surman
13) Rendell/Carr Quintet : Dusk Fire
14) John Coltrane : Giant Steps
15) Wyatt/Atzmon/Stephen : …for the ghosts within
16) Stan Tracey : Under Milkwood: Jazz Suite
17) Michael Garrick : The Heart is a Lotus
18) Stan Getz / Charlie Byrd : Jazz Samba
19) John Coltrane : A Love Supreme
20) Stanko, Thomasz (Quartet) : Soul Of Things

Nice to see Tubby Hayes get a mention. Joe Harriot is another British sax player I really like a lot. I even enjoy Harriot's Indo-Jazz offerings.

Thanks to Googamooga for reminding me of this amazing album, one i'd often think of looking into but would then forget about. Maybe it's just my ears, but wow - this seems as beautifully crafted and realised a collection of music as just about anything the Duke ever released. From the tender, reflective moments, like when Ray Nance's violin cuts through the silence like a pitying cry, to the exuberant wail of the horn section in all their glory, this is jazz to savour and enjoy. And Jackson is in extraordinary voice, the epitome of spiritual jazz and soul.

Cheers Googa!

1 Mike Westbrook - Love Songs
2 Joe Zawinul - Zawinul
3 John Coltrane - Ole Coltrane
4 Miles Davis - In a Silent way
5 Michael Garrick Sextet - The Heart is a Lotus
6 Kenny Wheeler - Windmill Tilter
7 McCoy Tyner - Extensions
8 Mike Taylor Remembered
9 Neil Ardley/Ian Carr/Don Rendell - Greek Variations
10 Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert
11 The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album
12 Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim
13 Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet - Dusk Fire
14 Mike Gibbs - Tanglewood '63
15 Graham Collier - Down Another Road
16 Alice Coltrane - Ptah, the El Daoud
17 Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil
18 John Surman/Alan Skidmore/Tony Oxley - Jazz in Britain 68-69
19 Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
20 Amancio D'Silva - Integration

Nothing too surprising here, tried to keep it to one artist one LP (failed slightly w/ the britjazz) - I could have included much more McCoy Tyner and I forgot about Roland Kirk. If it'd been held a month later then Search For The New Land would've been included (only had The Sidewinder before which is a bit raunchy for my tastes).

Looking over old Jazz threads one thing is obvious to me, we miss Kenji!
