Speaking for myself only, other than Opeth and the Gathering and bits of Rammstein, I'm not very familiar with a lot of European metal.
like many genre's once they become calcified
the songwriting isn't there,
blasts beats, cookie monster vocals, speed scale exercises, etc.,
are for the genre and its believers,keeping it strong
the 70's and 80's bands were at least part of the wider scene
but all that changed with punk and nwobhm/nwoahm
revolutions within rock and against the mainstream
nihilism unleashed, and a hunger for faster, heavier, abrasive, uglier, etc.,
