Beyond the 130 - Dexy's Midnight Runners
I'd agree that Rowland's voice was an acquired taste. I'd even go as far as to say it was BAD, at times. He had some fucking balls!
They were tremendous, across three major albums. You know the story. Some prefer to turn their heads away, seeing a kind of end-of-the-pier novelty act. They make me glad to be British, I tell thee!

The first album was really brilliant, the second album brilliant, the third album spectacularly brilliant, and the fourth album is brilliant.
And with a few huge hits thrown in.

I was unconvinced at first but by the mid 80s I was firmly on board.
And the three original albums stand up really well today - they sound fresh

I love all their albums, but for me, Too Rye Ay is their finest: a true classic.

Not by this American. I'm a fan and have been since their import 45s started showing up in these parts. The early singles and the Young Soul Rebels LP were wonderful (then) modern soul records. I had a chance to see them in the 80s but took ill and couldn't get out of bed the night of the show. A major disappointment.

They just seem so silly. That C'mon Eilleen song is grating, and the rest just seems like a bad bar band knock off. They seem like the kind of band that the locals would like if they never released a thing.

I found the recent Dexys album to be a bit overwrought but, yeah, the first three records, and the Projected Passion Revue, are special. He's a fairly unique talent.

Re: Beyond the 130 - Dexy's Midnight Runners
I love the first album and the whole artistic concept that went with it, but remain unconvinced that anything else was up to that.
The second invention was ripped off and and a bit embarrassing and I'd lost interest by the third.
but even only loving that first album they are an important band, but you get the feeling they were critically buried by Come on Eileen, it is a novelty song when all is said and done.

Moorcock, Moorcock, Michael Moorcock, you fervently moan.

I used to think that, but now I love it. It takes serious talent to write a song that great.

I've knocked 'em enough on here, but this is almost my exact view too.
One of my ex's favorite songs is C'mon Eileen. Maybe I should've seen that as the beginning of the end.

I agree it takes a talent to write a song that becomes a national ear worm like that, still don't like it and the whole gypsy schtick that went with it.
Now pea coats, donkey jackets and woolly hats, that is another story, horns, northern soul, Geno Washington? great look great sound.
Raggle taggle gypsys and violins? Fuck right off!

Why is it a novelty song? It's consistent musically with the rest of the album.
