B is probably the more solid and consistent but it's one of those lists that is reliable because it doesn't take any risks or produce any surprising or interesting picks.
That said, A is very mixed. I think it comes down to the new threes.

The Del Shannon pick is nice - but the Billy Nicholls original is better. The Flamin' Groovies are one of those bands that aren't really very good but which people in North America like because they rock in a reassuringly MOR way. And Eddie Hazel is a prog-funk cover of a minor Beatles number.

Jorge Ben is great (although a bit of a "token Brazilian" selection, ever since I wowed the crowds with the mighty 'Umbabarauma' years back), the Rother is pleasant but just sounds like a castoff from his band, and the Martyn too is nice. So fuck it, it's B.

The backing track is alright, you know? I don't like the guys voice however and overall I find it quite annoying.

I think with the cup we reached the stage a few years back where people were looking for "different" shit to win votes and, generally speaking, Brazilian (and African music) stepped into that hole. It's become like a signifier of "experimentation" or summat but it now just seems a bit conservative and predictable now. Plus there's a group of voters who like this stuff so it always wins votes and it's not the kind of thing that offends people like, say, a dance tune or some 00's shit, you know? It's safe like that so it crops up again and again.

Some of it's alright but I'm never blown away by it and think it's largely overrated.

I think there's lots of great stuff from Brazil but some of it takes a bit of getting used to.

Jorge Ben crops up a lot because he's a well-known and safe choice. It's like the way people make a list with post-punk and classic rock and then stick a Nina Simone cut in there.

We're getting too obsessed with all this talk of safe selections in my view. I mean what do people need to pick to be considered adventurous - does it all have to be techno punk from the Balkans and some singer whose demos have only just been discovered because he's been in an asylum the last thirty years?
As for the Brazilian music criticism. I would argue it doesn't get picked enough given it's a country with a huge and fascinating musical history. I've usually ended up with a Brazilian track or two in my lists most years (I put Milton Nascimento in my list for the very first cup, when everyone else was picking U2 and Radiohead) . I never considered it signified anything, as for me it's as natural as picking something from the US say.

Anyway on to the voting, I've enjoyed A's list but I think they've dropped the ball slightly with this latest three (Flamin Groovies sounded like Status Quo). With the addition of Rother and Jorge Ben, B's picking up steam and nudges ahead here.

It's your BCB underbelly.

Hear, hear. Bring back 'Another Girl, Another Planet,' I say.

:P

:D If I get through to the next round I've got a nice Brazilian version of 'Shot by Both Sides' lined up.

Your BCB lustre gets dimmer by the day, G.

Time to give up the self appointed tastemaster crown and give to someone more deserving.

It's like watching a punch drunk boxer who doesn't know when to retire.

Think of BCB for pity's sake

Fair doos.

I didn't want to do this but you've forced my hand and I shall have to resort to BCB force.

You might want to reconsider before you end up looking like the BCB equivalent of Mickey Rourke.
