BCB Cup 2018 - SEMI FINAL NOW ON

Postby martha » 06 Jan 2018, 21:32

EDITED - The Modernist is now running this thang. It's 8+3 format. Assemble your list of 8 tracks and PM it to the Modernist. Thanks!

It's time once again for the annual BCB cup. If you want to play sign up below.

WHAT THE HELL IS THE BCB CUP?
The BCB Cup is an annual tradition since 2005 in which contestants cobble together a list of tracks they think can defeat other players list's of tracks in a head to head match. There can be only one. The winning schmuck gets crowned as the 2018 cup winner and their name is engraved forever on the winner's list and they have the option of sporting a special demarcation that commemorates their win with a tag under their name for the rest of the year. It's quite the honor. It's the highlight of my year some years honestly, and my favorite thing about BCB after the Crimbo exchange. It's fun!

For past winners and their lists, check out this thread.
viewtopic.php?f=75&t=136960

HOW DO YOU PLAY?
1. Sign up below. The deadline is 7pm UTC February 1st, 2018.

2. Assemble your winning list of songs that you think kick ass (or that you think other BCBer's will vote for) and PM the first 8 tracks to the Modernist. (Round 1 begins with 8 songs. If you survive round one, the subsequent rounds each get 3new tracks added on to the end of that starting list.)

3. Moddie will match your list and an opponent's list in a head to head battle. Lists are posted anonymously as List A and List B in each round. Your identity is not revealed unless you lose the match. Matches are labelled numerically (ie. Round One - Match One...). This allows the members to vote blind, which reduces any favoritism. Please don't reveal which is your list or entreat friends to vote for yours. That would be unsporting

4. During each round, listen to every match and VOTE for your preferred list using "A" or "B" format. Please make your vote as clear as possible. Voting is open to ALL members of BCB. You may only vote once in each match. Don't cheat with additional aliases.

5. When the time for each round has elapsed, the results are tallied and the loser is announced in each pairing and eliminated. Those eliminated can and should continue to vote in subsequent rounds. They are invited to vociferously (and hopefully comically), whinge and bitch about their loss in the "Bitter Recriminations" thread.

6. The match winners should keep schtum - don't reveal your identity. Winners are not named and continue anonymously to duke it out in subsequent rounds. Winners PM Moddie their next five tracks and the process repeats until there is only one winner.

7. In the event of a tie vote, there's a tie breaker match. The winner of the tie-breaker goes through to the next round.

8. The final Champion will be enshrined on the Winner's list. They have the option to get a special tag below their avatar for bragging rights.

MINUTIAE:

PLEASE VOTE! Everyone can vote. Even people not signed up to play in the cup. Everyone.

The deadline to sign up and PM your first ten tracks to Moddie is 7pm UTC February 1st, 2018.

LINKS AND THE BLESSED SPAM FILTER:
The spam filter freaks out over multiple lists with links. The only work around I have found is to just add the URL after your list item...so please note the "new" (same as last year) proper way to format links...

CORRECT METHOD:
Sir Mix-a-Lot - Baby Got Back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qr89yq2wC9o
Extreme - More Than Words https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrIiLvg58SY

No other methods will work due to the spam filter being an asshat.

THE TIMELINE:

Deadline to sign up - 7pm UTC, Thursday, February 1st, 2018.

Deadline to PM your first EIGHT tracks to Moddie - 7pm UTC, Thursday, February 1st, 2018.

2018 Cup format and rules discussion...

Postby Darkness_Fish » 06 Jan 2018, 21:53

Are we definitely keeping the 10 vs 10 format? If so, I'll probably not bother. No offense intended to the organiser, who puts the hard work in, and I genuinely love the cups here. Just the track vs track format means that at least all ten tracks will get listened to. I don't mind losing, I expect to. Just that last year I put a bit of thought into 10 varied tracks and got beat by a supermarket "best driving tracks" CD, and it seemed kinda pointless, and had no horse to back after a single day.

I'll still vote, but I'll not contribute.

If you feel track vs track is too much hassle, btw, ignore me. I didn't volunteer to run the thing :-)

I'll run it however the boards want. I don't want you not to participate, I am pretty sure I'd vote for your list in most situations honestly -- but consensus can be the decider since I don't like making arbitrary decisions much.

To me part of the strategy in surviving round 1 is picking the right balance of personal and popular. It's fucked up but that's the cup. I somehow manage it most years -- I am usually out by round 3 though because my tastes are very niche. Certainly it's disappointing to make a first round exit, but you know...someone wins and someone loses every match generally.

But explain to me how the track by track thing would work... I don't really know what you mean by that, and i'm not opposed to it, just unfamiliar with it. However, to keep the sign up list focused on signing up only, let's discuss it here: viewtopic.php?f=75&t=136962

However it shakes down, I'm in. I wouldn't worry too much about it being too unwieldy as a) it's the 'big event' that happens here, and b) the number of participants seems to dwindle every year.

Yeah, I think we'll end up with 30-40 people, tops.

Don't be a pussy!

I know what you mean - I feel the same way. Too easy for songs to get lost on a list of 10

As mentioned elsewhere, I thought the 8+3 format was the best way forward.

Same here. I'll play whatever is decided, but 8+3 seems the best compromise.
