I quite like A. Its modern-ish and not what I expected.

A is really good, but then it's Sandy Denny, so it is to be expected.

Like these both - rare subtlety shown in the performances and, more importantly, the choices are neither obvious nor obscure.
Tough call, but I think B has a slight edge. And Tim Buckley says thanks for the template for Happy Sad.

Sandy Denny - the voice of an angel.
From her second LP which is a truly fine record.
Hauntingly beautiful.
Fred Neil wrote some great songs but, for me, others sung them better.
This selection is nice but not quite hitting it for me.
In the meantime Sandy [RIP] soars away
So, A has it
A has it

Interesting choice of a Sandy track, but great nevertheless. I couldn't get on with the Fred Neil track at all. It just dragged.

Excellent match up, very very close. The voice of an angel gets it.

Re: Folk Cup 2019 Final Round Match 7
Great vocals on A, but the music is as pedestrian a track as you could hope to hear. The organ and electric guitar just shit all over what could have been a nicely atmospheric vocal track. I just dont understand why you'd record a vocal as good as this, and then add all this cock rockery to it. That's as in cock-rock, not as in a garden feature of a particularly phallic nature. Not for me, all subtlety and taste has been cast aside by that extraneous widdling and space-filling.
Fred Neil certainly doesn't have as pleasant a voice. And this isn't feeling a particularly folky track, there's a definite Tim Buckley feel to it. That repetitive one-note bass also reminds me of Jac Berrocal's magnificent Rock n Roll Station, although that track features much more bicycle than this. Not really my ballpark this, but it's an interesting choice, and it shows a better understanding of how to structure and arrange a track than A's ham-fisted nonsense.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Despite the rather plodding rhythm of A the strength of the melody, the touches of slide guitar and Sandy's wonderful voice elevate it above the mundane. Lovely track.
B is another one that plods a little but doesn't have the saving graces of A.

A: A beautiful Sandy Denny track. The steel guitar is a nice addition. She recently restored my opinion of Fairport Convention and I've been revisiting her stuff quite heavily recently. Simply lovely voice. I'm going to have to give this record a go in its entirety soon.
B: One of his unbeatable tracks. Perfection. He can nearly get a listener to explore heroin for themselves, you know... just to see what it's all about. Like Mr. Hatz (Hey Dave) says Tim Buckley owes Fred his lunch money. And I love me some Tim Buckley.

A finds Sandy in countrified mode which is nice but for me no patch on the more traditional settings she employed before.
B slayed me for some reason. It's just a perfect moodsetter.

Both quite broad church and an interesting match up. I'm not quite sure if i really love either, but A is a track i'm likely to play more often.

I like Fred Neil's voice, but this is a dirge...
Odd Sandy choice, as noted, but it is absolutely glorious, of course.

Both really good, but on a lazy weekend the rich laid back resonance of Fred is calling to me more.
