Re: Folk Cup 2019 Round 6 Match 8
Soprano sax is not a folk instrument, and while I like Joni, that's the period during which she was really trying to convince us that she's strayed very, very far from her folk roots. I'd have voted for it in the jazz cup.
B is, I'm guessing, typical of whatever the hell it is, but it's pretty cool. And again, I have strong opinions about how to define that four-letter word that starts with 'F'.

I have about 5 or 6 Joni albums but am not a big fan.
Originally from For the Roses I think
Very pleasant
Eivor I have not heard of - is that a band or a person?
It initially reminded me of Enya/Clannad which is certainly not a bad thing
Then the New Age sounds came in which I wasn't sure about.
But no harm done - it worked well for my old ears.
Yes, I enjoyed it more than Joni
So B has it
B has it

The sax is a descendent of the very folky clarinet. It's all in the mind. If you play the notes in a folky way then it becomes a folk instrument...
Off the top of my head Fairport, Home Service, The Albion Band and Steeleye Span all have used saxes.
If I recall David Bowie played alto sax on one of the latter's albums - Now We Are Six
[I can't recall the track title]

Hatz - apologies if you are talking specifically about the soprano sax - I may have jumped in too soon.
It's still worthy of further discussion though

A strange choice of Joni Mitchell song, from the period when she was moving away from her folkie roots.

A sounds quite folky to me, it's by no means the furthest digression from folk that we've had in this cup. Certainly, it isn't very jazzy. It's quite good, too, with bonus points for not really having a chorus.
B's a more adventurous and original pick though. The over-production and over-use of echo tries to ruin what sounds an interesting piece of music under it all. It really does veer a bit close to new-age candle soundrack, or "ethnic" interlude in the Eurovision song contest, but there's something interesting there.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Never quite understood the adulation some feel for Joni, and my elder sister crooning 'I've looked at love from... endlessly and drippily tthroughout the summer of '69 or '70 or '71 - dear God, she went on and on in a tiresome fashion didn't help. When it comes down to it, I don't really like the nasal tone of Joni's voice.
Eivor is much more one of my things.

Interesting picks, folks, well done. A less obvious Joni pick with a lot to like versus, well, B. For digging a bit deeper...

B was a little too new agey and polished and kind of washed over me a little but it wasn't bad by any means.
I like some Joni in small does and this track worked for me, sax and all.

A - love Joni, you peeps are delusional. Although not sure how folkie this is, its still a nice tune.
B- I liked be very tribal sounding, liked the whole drum sound.
tough call I'll give it to Joni due to all the hate for her.

I prefer Värttinä when it comes to Scandi-folk...
Not my Joni pick at all, but still nice.

Much as I love Joni, I have qualms as this is more jazzy Joni than folky Joni, although you could almost set For The Roses as some kind of transition point. However didn't like B much so
