Re: Folk Cup 2019 Round 3 Match 3
This is easy.
I am not keen on Joan Baez's prissy voice and I love Stivell.
The track selection is a corker. Rousing stuff
[I had the pleasure of seeing him live (with Dan ar Bras) circa 1984 at The George Rokeby in Finsbury Park, north London where I was living at the time- awesome]
So, A has it
A has it

A by default before I'd even played it (it was OK as it happens) but i never really liked Baez, she always seems so po faced and somehow manages to suck all the joy out of folk music. This track in particular I've always hated with a passion. The original is one of the greatest things ever. She can't even get the words right - It's "Stoneman's cavalry" not "so much cavalry" and most unforgiveabl eof all is the way a song of amger is reduced in the chorus to a jolly singalong It's simply horrible.

Love the Alain Stivell, the harp is great, and so is the song. Breton music is something I need to explore more of really because I always enjoy it when I hear it.
Side note - the tune sounded familiar so I had a peek on Wikipedia - apparently it was recorded by Ray Fisher and Martin Carthy. I kind of knew Ray Fisher as she ran the Bridge folk club in Newcastle when I was a student. Maybe I heard it there?
I don't hold the same distaste for Joan Baez as some people - but there is a special place in hell for people who massacre classics.

All the way.

Re: Folk Cup 2019 Round 3 Match 3
Finally, an easy one!
I basically agree with everything the Fish says about B, I like some Joanie OK - "Diamonds and Rust" is actually a great song - but everything about this is just wrong, and it's not even one of my favorite Band songs. I resent it being her biggest hit.
I'm hit and miss with Stivell, but the earlier stuff doesn't get as fruity as he'd get. It'd still be A even so, for all the reasons above, but I'm happy to say I'm not at all conflicted about it.

I recognize A as a Dutch drinking song (Bots- Zeven dagen lang)! Good stuff here!
I'm not a Baez-fan unfortunately.....

Not 100% keen on A but the Joan Baez cover version is very flawed.

Well, A definitely sounds like some more authentic folky stuff, rabble-rousing with genuine rabble. It's an interesting pick, and a completely new name to me. Knew I should've gone for the obscure choices.
I don't have anything against Joan Baez at all, I don't agree with the criticisms of her voice which have been voiced here. Unfortunately, it's a song I really don't like, and it's all a bit too big budgety and over-egged for me.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

A - like the harp and music but the singer is just okay the merry rousers in the back round are annoying. And you guys all have a problem with Joan and okay with this ? I do like the music so might need to check out other songs.
B- No I didn't pick this nor is it high on my Joan stuff. But I'm a fan of Joan and this is a nice cover.

Can't believe the pure voice of Baez loses to the bullcrap that is A. Okay, so it takes liberties with a classic by The Band, but that is what covers are meant to do. B

Baez's one song I'd like to never hear again, pitted against the Breton folk institution in his tender youth.

Re: Folk Cup 2019 Round 3 Match 3
Can't be dealing with A at all. Horrible racket.
B by default, even though it's not remotely folky, as JB had crossed over into pop by this point. I liked her a lot in the 60s, the austere crystal-smashing soprano that modulated when you least expected it into a very warm lower register.

A is by someone I haven't heard for years.
B is Joan Baez flouncing about in borrowed togs, and not for the first or last time of course.
