This is a surprisingly difficult choice. I can't get away from the fact I like A better. I admire the purity of voice in B but not the lack of any musical progression within the song.

I have a very high tolerance for unusual voices - Joanna Newsom ? Bring it on
I also love the soprano voice at full tilt - I'll gladly listen to Der Rosenkavalier until the cows come home.

However B is ike when you're on a bus or train and there's a really young child beong annoying and then they do that high pitched shriek thingthat goes right through you, makes you shudder and wince and think your ears are bleeding.

Compared to which A is Fotheringay.

John the Gun from Fotheringay 2 released in 2008 although the track was recorded in 1970 and featured heavily in live Fotheringay and Sandy sets.

A lovely track with vocals from the voice on an angel and delightful guitar from Jerry Donahue.

B I have never heard of but it was very pleasant - the vocals seemed very Kate Bush to me which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Pleasant and I enjoyed it.

But for me A has it

A has it

Wow - straight out with the heavy artillery!

I love Fotheringay, I love Sandys voice, and this is probably my favourite track by them.

So I feel sorry for B. I applaud the choice of something different, I'm hoping form this cup to find something new that I love. But this isn't it.

Zilth Pilchards rates Fotheringay very highly, but I can't really get behind it. On the other hand, B sounds like the bastard child of Mrs. Mills, so by default, A

Not sure what everybody's talking about with the voice on B. It's pretty and pure, just a bit unusual. Not hearing it as a problem and certainly not a deal breaker. Tempting to vote for it just because I think it's being treated unfairly.

That said, though I'm not much of a Fotheringay fan all told - got to be too much about Trevor Lucas - that's one of their better songs, and there's not much to B really. So ultimately I have to vote - under duress - for A.

Put another way, I agree with Jumper K completely! :o

Lovely female vocals on A, but the insturmentation is very much a beer-stained carpet of a track. It appears in thrall to blues rock and everything that is unholy and wrong with the world.

Which makes it such a shame that the worst track in the first round is beating the lovely Ms Arnalds by a distance. I've seen her live twice, and cumulatively I reckon there were less than 50 people present. The first gig I went to, I remember feeling sorry for the support act, as there were only 5 people in the audience at this point. Soon enough, there were more on stage than in the crowd, as two of the crowd were friends and collaborators. Anyway, I thought I'd pick something short and sweet for the cup, and properly folky (unlike the abomination that is A), the absolute purity of tone to her voice is one of the natural wonders of the world, and even if you don't like this particular track, I'd recommend everyone interested in folk check out her Innundir Skinni album, some of which is sung in English. Her disappointing third album, however, was disappointing, even by the standards of disappointing third albums.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Despite Sandy's vocals I found A plodded along a little too dourly. B was an interesting little thing and I liked the vocal.

a - Sunday Dinner is a great folk singer, hell a great singer, but Fotheringay are a rotten rock band. Unlistenable, ugly tosh.
b - Pretty strumming, otherworldly voice, something South-East Asian about the sound, something a little Bjorkish about the voice (which is not a good thing in my book, but it's more acceptable here stripped of the shrieky one's pretensions). Maybe its an Islandic thing. Can't say I was thrilled with it, but wins easily here against that blues-rock gubbins.

I thought B was rather pretty. A seems to be getting a lot of default "it's Sandy" votes, but I agree with TCE that the music was quite plodding.

A is ok, but B is more interesting for me and closer to what i want to hear in this Cup.
