Goblin - one of Italians finest 70s rock bands.

This track selection has shed-loads of the bouncebouncebounce factor and oozingly full of music. To the rafters. Man

A nice riff, tidy tubs penetrating guitar, stomping bass and delicious keyboards.

What more can a fully fledged (and accredited) prog goon want...?

Then there is Tippet and his boys - this is a superb track from a corker of an album.

All the greats are on this track - Elton Dean, Roy Babbington, Robert Wyatt, Mark Charig and Nic Evans - all of whom have done a stint with Soft Machine and they make a fantastic sound.

My only criticism of this track selection is that the tubs are Robert Wyatt and not Phil Howard (who also did a short stint with The Softs [half of 5] - the latter who played on soem of the other tracks.

Robert Wyatt as much as I love him is not up to this jazz stuff - Phil would have done a much better job.

So two CCs but my vote will go to the sublime:

B verges on the tuneless and self-indulgent. More avant jazz than jazz fusion, so not for me.

A solid prog from the magnificent Goblin!

I love me some Goblin, but A's just not hitting the spot for me as much as expected right now. I think maybe it tails off a bit at the end, while B is sustained seemingly past the fade. Doesn't always work for me, but it is here, for whatever reason.

After watching Brand X live earlier this year I started listening more to prog-fusion and Tippett really hit the spot tonight.
A is a great foil though, one of the more well-rounded albums and tracks. I will step up though and give it to

Goblin are a band that are never quite as good as their reputation would have you believe - too many variations on a certain Oldfield theme and not enough originality of their own - but when they do come up with some ideas of their own they are pretty good. I like this one a lot.

The Tippett piece sounded like an a never-ending intro to a track that never quite gets started but it's not a bad bit of fusion with some nice squawking.

These are both interesting selections, so I'm going purely based off mood for my pick. A sounds like a synth funk version of Genesis and I really like how it flows. I've been meaning to check out Dedicated to You, But You Weren't Listening for quite sometime now. It's an album from the Canterbury Scene that kinda slipped under my radar. After hearing that track, I'm certainly bumping that listen up to today. B takes it.

B is an interminable mess with a soupçon of pretentious musoship thrown in. Barrel dredging nonsense.

I like both of these a fair bit. There's a nice "opening theme" quality to A, reminds me a bit of VdGG's "Theme One" and so on, just a neat straight-forward progger based on a particular idea, to the point and whatnot. B is really superb though, when Canterbury can often be playfully cynical and eschew earnest soul-searching in favour of clever and intriguing passages, this seems a lot closer to the spiritual jazz of contemporaries like Sonny Sharrock and Pharoah Sanders. Absolutely excellent stuff.

[Hightea]

A - is a nice track however a little step down from the top italian bands of the 70's. Has lots of hints of 70's prog rock but doesn't come together as its own. I still like it but its missing some spice.

B - great musicians blend for a nice fusion piece of music
