Stargazer is a heavy rock classic but only has the most tenuous link to prog.

The Nektar track is most definitely prog rock and should be the worthy winner here.

Bloody 'ell two Carlsson Corkers

We listen to derivative claptrap and then the real stuff turns up in bucketfulls.

ooofness abounds!

Nektar (who many sometimes think are a German band) made soem seminally robust albums - this track is taken from one of them

Roye Albrighton was a real talent.

Stargazer - what a track? A safer choice...

While the oofness of A is undeniable, I (stop me if you've heard this one) could have easily dispensed with the last few minutes.

I know B is twice as long, but there's enough variety of mood to justify it. The passages in the middle are particularly nicely done.

RTF is an all time favorite song. Roye and the band are at their peak.

Stargazer is a good song but not against RTF

B

Nektar Reunion - 02 - I'm not in it I decided to take a picture of it. :D

Stargazer sounds like a proto-Prog metal but is better than anything I've heard in that genre. The sound of goblins crawling out of your speakers as Bruce Dickinson perfectly described it.

I haven't heard the Nektar track for ages. It's actually much better than I remember it to be.

A solid match but I'll go for Rainbow's finest 8 minutes

Stargazer is a supreme pick and a terrific reminder of one of the great rock bands of the 70s.

I was privileged to hear Roye and the band play this in the streaming rain on a cruise ship somewhere in the Caribbean..... what a trip that was and how brilliant this band.

A is one of those cases where a component or two really muck up the whole for me. I cannot stomach Dio, or similar NWOBM-type screamers like him. It's awfully tacky and has always given Rainbow a tackiness about them that the better sides of Led Zep, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath managed to avoid back in their day - all this even whilst alluding to really naff high fantasy imaginaries as they usually did. The playing and riffing is of course very strong otherwise.

Nektar's been one of those bands I've only passingly heard and have always meant to get deeper into. This track at least wouldn't be out of place in The Yes Album. As it turns out, it's not a bad album to project in one's mind at all. B
