The Anthony Phillips track worked better by sustaining the mood of the piece. The incantation style of singing on the Quintessence song didn't really appeal to me.

Battle of the pastoral prog folk.

A is just lovely - perfect for a nature documentary with views of rolling hills - absent that, my mind wanders.

B is much more self-contained, and every bit as lovely. And (hatz cliche #2) it's over before it starts to lose my attention.

I' like a pound for every time I have seen Quintessence live

Always better live than on record

Taken from their debut and possibly best album.

Some lovely flute from the Australian Raja Ram and some nice guiatr from Allan Mostert

I never got into Mr Phillips solo work and this is no exception - too 'strummy'

An easy one for me

A was fine if not particularly memorable.
B the guy couldn’t sing.

A is a gorgeous suite of nautical flavoured tunes from one of my favourite albums of his New England.

B suffered from the curse of the bad Prog singers. Musically it was a fine and I'm always partial to a little flute. Anthony Phillips can't sing either but here he keeps his gob shut, plus he has better tunes.

I haven't heard much Anthony Phillips aside from The Geese & the Ghost, which I nevertheless like quite a bit. This is a rather pleasant track, something about it reminds me of a more pastoral acoustic Pat Metheny, even if there's also a slight whiff of saccharine about it too. B's very much of its time and will get no extra points for originality, but it's a nice sound all the same, quite like the wig-out section as well as the slightly raga-tinged sound of it all. Hmm... B, but it's close.

The Anthony Phillips song was pleasant enough, likable but not as endearing as the Quintessence. B

A -Anthony Phillips tune is a nice one although a bit long and drawn out. - I only know his first two albums. Nice mellow soothing music.

B - Quintessence - Pearl And Bird - nice flute and mellow chanting. Then the music stops for some bad singer. Its disjointed after that.

B is an attempt at a pop-raga that doesn't quite lift off for me.
I do like a lot of Phillips solo-material without really falling in love with it but this triptych is among his best- a lively collection of nice open guitarworks rolled into one.

A is sort of light-weight and doesn't really go anywhere (as is often the case with Anthony Phillips), but I like it better than B .

If pop raga is what B is then at least I’ve learned that pop raga isn’t for me.
