Wow, A is all over the shop, a huge bag of good and bad. B is good.

A is quite fascinating in a way, with pretty much everybody involved in the recording competing to see how much they can overdo it. Quite ridiculous but I did find myself bobbing along a bit; there is some charm in its ridiculousness.

Hüsker Dü really annoy me actually, as they somehow manage to convince people that such dull and predictable songs are somehow great just because they're played on distorted and badly produced guitars. They're not great, they're shit. Every single song of their sounds like it was written in two minutes, and recorded in less. One of the most pernicious and unwelcome influences in music. Want to know why modern indie is so unadventurous and songwriting is a dying art? Look no further than the praise handed out to these bozos.

I’m torn on HD, sometimes I get myself convinced by some of the proselytising on here and in the press, then I listen and they sound utterly flat and mundane. I prefer them when they’re not accompanied by the bees in a tin though. Anyway, it’s all moot as I loved A, absolutely the right side of that windswept and highly produced Caledonian thing that swept up post-indie Orange Juice, Friends Again, Blue Nile, Hipsway and so on but ultimately ended in the dismal nadir of Hue & Cry and Deacon Blue. Great pick.

I quite enjoyed A as a period piece, but B is fabulous.
