Re: 80s Cup Round 9 Match 5
Unlike most people, I thought NO needed a few more tunes before they hit their golden period. This is too much JD with a different singer, and Hannet doing his thing.
Nothing to beat here, though

B wins here and possibly against any track in this cup. It's simply one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

It's clearly B here, but that's my last New Order vote, and I'd be quite happy if I didn't hear them again for a little while.

B is as close to genius as we have come in this competition. Pure class. Barney is a demon with a chord followed by a simple lazy inversion. Here he plays a C barre high up the neck and then plays it again with the B and the top E open and ringing, it just sounds very complex melodically but is a piece of piss. And hooky and Steven M both play out of their skins too.
Fantastic stuff.

A is clearly the more adventurous pick. But B is an untouchable classic. "Ceremony" is joint equal with "Temptation" as New Order's only moment where they truly achieved absolute greatness. And given everything I've written at length about Temptation, that's not something I'm saying lightly. It's an absolute inspiration.

Again with the New Order? A all day long and twice on Sunday. That is absolutely the "Nuggets" of early rap. What a crazy sound! One of the picks of the cup so far.
I guess I get the enthusiasm for B for someone who likes what they do in the first place - they at least pound away while they're driving that riff into the ground - but to a non-believer like me it sounds like the proverbial sound and fury signifying nothing.

A was much better when Siouxsie made a proper track out of it.
B is top grade New Order - and that's plenty good enough for most 80's music.

A is a brave pick and it's nice to be reminded how radical Schooly D's sound was. In truth it was probably too minimal for me. I like a bit of sugar with my tea.
B still sounds fantastic to me. It's really all about the web of sound created by the mesh of guitar and bass. I don't think they ever did anything quite like it again.

A is full of elements I dislike: the tinny percussion sound, the scratching, the monotonous rap.
B is a decent New Order pick, I'm not a fan but it's more than enough here.

Two very good choices, and I'm going with the sparse and rather frightening attack of Schooly D because it's getting short shrift here. A.
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.
