If you think I'm going to vote against a classic 80s anthem, you must be actually MENTAL.

Re: 80s Cup Round 9 Match 3
B summed up much of my student experience - along with the HMHB lyric (no sign of them in this competition yet!) "I live life in the bus lane". Despite taunting my pals with the line from Fatima Mansions (as we took the train from Falmer into Brighton) I think I only ever heard the song on the Peel Show.
I have a beef with Snub TV (unfairly maybe). I once put a band on because their agent/manager assured me that Snub TV would be down to film the event. Imagine my excitement! The band were a bit dull - indie New Yorkers who had supposedly been Madge's band in her early days called Deep Six. A couple of entrepreneurs I knew knocked up some big posters for me - they asked for some background about the band and I mentioned the Madonna connection but specifically told them not to put that on the poster - which of course they did! Deep Six went bat-shit when they saw the poster, naturally, rampaging around the venue tearing them down angrily. Snub TV snubbed the event of course - about 20 paying punters turned up to see Madonna. Another Students Union Ents triumph! Of the two entrepreneurs, one went on to have a brief TV series on Channel 4 where he went around fixing people's failing businesses (this always seemed to involve staging an Ibiza Night, regardless of the type of business) while the other prick went on to be tory MP for Brighton Kemp Town
My 17 year old daughter was playing the Simple Minds tune yesterday! It's pretty good.

I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

I really wanted to punish A for picking that, they had so much good stuff in the 80s, why an earth go for that choice. But then I heard B and it was a horribly cluttered, overproduced thing with a really ugly sound. Purely as a pop record A is probably better, but I don't know if I can bring myself to vote for it. May come back to this tie.

Bloody hell. It's sub U2 stadium bobbins, and it was a monster hit. Terrible pick for a cup, for its ubiquity, its crassness, it's pomp and ubiquity, and its ubiquity as well as its ubiquity.
I had no idea this is what Fatima Mansions sounded like. Well, I'm presuming they didn't always sound this muffled and straight-from-damp-VHS, but it's very Sigue Sigue Sputnik meets Bowie. It's got a very kind tie here, because it gets the vote purely on basis of being less obvious.

I find both very unpleasant listening, A because it's everything I hate about the decade tied neatly with a silky bow. B 'cause it's just a cluttered, ugly thing.
As my fishy friend says, B is less obvious. Lucky for it.

Okay I think I can finally bring myself round to voting in this tie.
I'm going B simply because A is such a poor pick. Even Simple Minds never liked it.

I've never really got to grip with Simple Minds, especially during this period which even fans of the band don't seem to care for.
B reminded me of 80's goth-era Damned and for me that's not a bad thing.

Scotland vs Ireland
A - Biggus Dickus never really appealed to me. The nearest he got to greatness was marrying Ms Hynde. So many better post-punk bands from Scotland. This song is not familiar to me. Bit boring.
B - Cathal Coughlan again, in the band he formed after Microdisney. Not familiar with this song. Pretty nifty bit of anti-Thatch punkery. Wins easily

Re: 80s Cup Round 9 Match 3
B isn't great, but A is atrocious. I've never liked Simple Minds at all really, and this is the worst one, even as someone who can dig big 80s hits to such an extent that I listen to an 80s station in the car.

'DYFAM' is nice as a bit of nostalgia at karaoke and such, but it's nowhere near peak SM for me. ANYTHING off the previous records would probably have won here, as i think B is just OK. But as it is...
