The Bunnymen trying to appeal to a wider audience doesn't work...Vote B

I don't hear E&tB trying to do anything particularly outside what they normally do, other than Sarge trying to sound even more like Tom Verlaine. Which I approve of, of course.

A without much deliberation. If anything B is to A as A is to my earlier Verlaine pick.

Fuck's sake, do you all confer before you pick a song or something. Did you decide that it was the Bunnymen, Fall, and Propaganda cup? This sounds like them trying to be The Sisters circa Floodland, and no-one should attempt that without a safety net. And talking of Sisters clones...

Proper Leeds goth, drum machine in place, distorted eldritch vocals. Actually, I think their better tracks had much more Eldritchy vocals, "Walking on Your Hands" with the proper deep-voice stylings. But I'll vote for second-division goth with nice guitars over big-budget Bunnymen any day.

Jeez...

Both irredeemably dull, in their own sadistic ways.

The Bunnymen again and it's the weakest selection yet, seeing them at their U2ish blandest, kept afloat by strong guitar work.

B is the kind of thing I wish I had drawn myself against. It's not the kind of thing that appeals to many on BCB, and it's not very good even within its field. Generic and dull.

I like a couple of RLYL tunes, this isn't either of them. I watched the whole video out of morbid curiosity - I wanted to see those marines get nuked. I'm assuming the nuclear device was dropped from plane you see the vapour trail of at the start. Imagine if they dropped it slightly off target!
Anyway, dull tune.

E&TB's eponymous LP is pretty dull too on the whole except for Lips Like Sugar. A classic One Sting Will riff. Big tune.

There comes a time in every band's career ( bar the small number who split prematurely) where they reach that point where their peak is behind them and they begin to sound drained of energy and ideas. It's always sad when it happens and when I heard some of the tracks (including this) for the fifth album, I knew The Bunnymen had reached that moment too. This is a tired retread of a, by now, very familiar Bunnymen sound. The chorus is pretty strong to be fair and a reminder of former glories, but mostly the chorus serves to illustrate how lifeless the rest of the song is.
RLYL were one of a handful of goth bands with an identikit sound, and seemingly all from Yorkshire, who could be found dwelling in the lower reaches of the independent charts in the mid eighties. This comes across as Sisters of Mercy in a coma and is a sludgefest entirely without interest. Worst pick of the round. Sorry.

My vote is near the top of the page (assuming we're still on page one!).

I don't think you're being quite fair on me there, surely mine is a contender. Just wait till round 7.

Not even counting the utter amount of flotsam from this round, you are saying this track is worse than the Pedophile Puppet Serenade from Match 7 ?

Well that was a forfeit pick from Penk so doesn't really count.

I find the unrelenting stodgy tedium of B strangely appealing in the context of this cup. As you know, dear fellow voters, the Bunnies can be to my taste but it has to be a lot more preposterous than this.
