Re: 80s Cup Round 5 Match 12
A is a riff with screaming over it. There is probably some point to it that I'm missing. Nah!
B meanders like a typical Go Betweens track, but passes by pleasantly enough.

B Crowded House with indie cred? Good song though.
B is a rather dull sub-Cure effort. Not today thanks.

A has quite an ear-catching abrasive and confrontational sound, but it becomes lifeless and dirgey very quickly. It's the kind of thing Killing Joke did much better. They would've brought an elemental energy to the table.
I'm not all that keen on the smooth, major label sound Go-Betweens had in this period which gets dangerously close to someone like Deacon Blue. That said, this is a pretty strong song with the euphoria of the chorus sounding suitably stirring. It probably should've been a hit for them.

I think I might have been a big Go-Betweens fan if I'd heard more from them at the time. But I didn't (except for Right Here which was quite nice). It's all very polite.
I read Robert Forster's book last year - great book but it didn't induce me to investigate their stuff.

I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

Re: 80s Cup Round 5 Match 12
A was a promising industrial punk grind that never went anywhere; they just got stuck in the intro groove and gave up after two minutes.
It's strange the way BCB moves in cycles: five or ten years ago the Go-Betweens were a "big name" band on here but these days they're a fairly minor concern. It might be the increased American influence on the board: they don't like sensitive and wordy indie, preferring their indie to sound like crotch sweat and petrol. This is from the band's "we want a hit" period and the production is rather too shiny and bland (they always suffered from bad production), but it's got hooks, wit and charm, a good showcase for the strength of their songwriting.

Re: 80s Cup Round 5 Match 12
Blimey, I never knew anyone else picked up on my banging on about Minimal Man. Really the pioneer of US industrial, I like the kind of filthy Chrome sound he gets, all hiss and scuzzed up fuzz. I've only ever managed to pick up two albums, this one and his later Belgian EBM thing Slave Lullabies. It's a slight track, sure enough, but it captures his aesthetic well, making an art of the technical restrictions, much like black metal bands do.
B sounds a shit-load like James. The band. I guess these were first, which must be a crumb of comfort to them, but doesn't excuse them. As generic an indie generic song as you could generically hope to generically hear.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Musically, I always found the Go-Betweens very uninspiring.
But here, they're a lesser evil.

Re: 80s Cup Round 5 Match 12
It might not be the most moving Go Betweens song- that would be "Dusty in Here", "Cattle & Cane" or "Dive for Your Memory" for me- but it's one of their most likable songs. There's a sense of defiance about this track that I really like, it seems to be about facing up to whatever life throws at you.
B by a major distance.
