Re: 80s Cup Round 4 Match 10
Gotta love a match that's over in under four minutes. Sort of a filler jam as Minutemen songs go, but I still like B. Unexpected third showing from possibly my favorite band of the 80s. Almost one in every round. I doubt it'll keep up, but it's making life worth living for the time being.

IF I had known Minutemen was going to pop up this often, I'd have gone with a different LA punk band in the first round, for some variety..Vote B

Please no more Minutemen. Ever.

Re: 80s Cup Round 4 Match 10
Ooh, a bit more rockabilly. Not too bad, I like the proper rock n' roll licks and the twangy bass, you just wonder why they didn't get a better vocalist. You know, you've got all that 50s authenticity, you can still be modernly aggressive without having a shouty pillock. Reminds me of that episode of Only Fools and Horses where Rodney misses out on a TOTP appearance.
Yeah, I'm not sure what the Minutemen are good at. Not sure what they're bad at, either. Their songs seem competently enough played, with a bit of dynamism and a fairly distinctive style. They just don't seem to actually be songs, more a brief interlude while you wait for something explosive to happen that never does.
Hmm. Close one. A

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Re: 80s Cup Round 4 Match 10
The Meteors were psychobilly rather than rockabilly of course which meant they weren't aiming for an authentic 50s sound, anymore than The Cramps were. They ploughed a narrow field, but I was a bit of a fan back in the day. They were a blast of bracing energy.
B seems too long even at two minutes. It comes across like an amateur band jamming in their garage with the flashy guitarist trying to impress the others. And there's no song to speak of.

A is fun, a bit of hopped-up retro whizz. Shame about the yobbish vocals but you can't have everything.
I'm the one "hosting" this tournament and even I am getting tired of how often the Minutemen are turning up. Take away the underground cred and they're just another quirky funk-rock outfit for stoners. Red Hot Chili Peppers with an image problem.

Re: 80s Cup Round 4 Match 10
Every biker jacket in the mid 80s had The Meteors painted on the back of it. It's hard to believe that it's this weak ersatz rockabilly that they all risked ruining a decent bit of leather for. Perhaps you had to be there.
... Oh good more Minutemen. Sigh

A's vocals are awful, but i do love me some rockabilly music. B is also fine, excellent guitars, but not quite enough.

How many examples of Minutemen do we really need to confirm that they weren't very good?
A was a blast of energy with horrid vocals. It'll do
