I enjoyed A's angular charms more than B's braggadocio

A tough call. A is another on my short list - or at least the album was, though that's probably not the song I would have chosen. But I want to reward A for not picking "That's When I Reach For My Revolver."

But B is simply undeniable. Braggadocio it may be, but it's impressively unrelenting, and rare for something that was a minor hit in the 80s, has dated very well. It's also at least a slightly deeper pick than what we've had so far.

One of the finest matches so far - not coincidentally pretty much lycra-free.

I liked the committed urgency of A, which reminded me of The Ruts in some respects, it just lacked that killer chorus to nail the point home.
I got bored with B fairly quickly.

B was really quite dull after the first 30 seconds.

The first tune was okay, not great, but certainly good enough here.

Mission of Burma were one of the best of the early-80s American bands and this is a taut, zinging highlight, all about the interplay between the frantic bass riff and the guitars and feedback.
B is good too, a fine old-school cut that would have won many a match-up in this round but I'm going to give this one to A.

It's always this bloody track, did they only record one song or something? It's a decent enough song, a kind of genteel take on punk, not very much like a fight song at all. REM on steroids. Presuming that REM never exercise.

B is genteel in a similar way. He's going on about how dope he is, but he's enunciating clearly and calmly, like he's been on a work-sponsored public speaking course. It's quite pleasant, but doesn't do an awful lot. Neither track did, really.

A
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

The forceful, wired, energy of A takes this quite handily. I like the sheer staccato attack of it.
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.
