This is such a shame - the Archie Shepp track is so good, yet comes second to one of the defining tracks of the disco era. And I know we should encourage relatively unknown music but... "Disco Inferno" is a titan, isn't it?

Not sure what to make of B. Like standing to listen to a cool group playing on the street, while a group of street protestors stand closer still, hollering slogans into your ear. Not nice.
'Disco Inferno' is of course an absolute delight, one of the very best hits of the age. All the good things about the genre are there. Fucking A.

Re: 70s KnockOut Cup- Final 5
Hmm, this final tie is as if Moddie has played his one ultra-popular track joker, and fange has slapped it down with a megalith of funk, soul and jazz. No doubt which way I'm going here. "Disco Inferno" is a fun little piece of froth, which I've no desire to ever hear again. Which seems harsh, because I'm sure it achieves everything it wants, and is no doubt a tightly written pop number. But "Attica Blues" is a wall of street noise, a complex harsh and dirty stream of fire. The last time fange banged on about this, I forgot to follow up and check out the album. This time, I'll probably still forget to, but that's cos I'm a numpty.

The intro of A does more for me that the entirety of B.

I love A, but B is something special. One of those rare things "bursting with ideas" that doesn't sound too cluttered or busy (to my ears, anyway - your mileage may vary).

a - given the comments above, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that as far as I know, I never heard this before. It's relentless, in a not-bad way, the lyrics are total pants, the group vocals are OK in a third-division Drifters kind of way, it has a few hooks: it's a perfect generic disco record, in other words, but I don't dance. 4.5 / 10
b - I'm sure I heard this before, in a JB&S cup, although I don't remember what I thought then. Now, some fine frantic gospelish vocals, a nice bit of tootling by Mr Shep in the background, doing a Daddy G-stylee infill job, and overall as relentless a drive as A . It's a holy mess to my ears, although no doubt structure and other stuff would emerge on repeated listens it is not going to get. Was reminded of the Tempts' Rolling Stone, without ever really knowing why. 5 /10

A is irresistible, plus it always reminds me of Peter Kay’s canine-loving fire safety officer.

Both wonderful, absolutely peak 70s music. I'm going with A; as much i love B, 'DI' is one of those songs that reminds me of growing up in the 70s.

I hated disco at the time - not so much these days - so A hits no nostalgia factor for me, and I don't get any excitement at its playing. I found B quite exciting and full of musical offering, maybe the best pick of this (rather disappointing) final.

Re: 70s KnockOut Cup- Final 5
I've always loved Disco Inferno. I remember buying a Trammps album on vinyl as a teenager in the hope of getting more of the same, but the rest of their material was quite anodyne. It's the way the track surges towards that glorious chorus...so exciting. It also represents a commercial side of the 70s that needed representing in the final (there's been a lack of big tunes generally I think).
B is absolutely explosive, as tougher and relentless piece of funk ( and it's certainly much closer to that than jazz) as you'll hear. I love it when established artists from one genre go into another and bring something really fresh to it.
It's close, but for being the fresher selection..B

I like A but it’s too “iconic”. Hold Back the Night would have been a better selection.

A is an iconic slice of disco that I would have ran away from once upon a time but these days can enjoy. I like B to a certain extent but the relentless shouting wore me out and made me start to think that Peter Hammill is actually quite restrained in comparison.
