I listened to both - they both started out with promise but then failed to maintain the initial positive vibe.
I honestly don't know but... it's probably A for me, but without conviction.

Re: 70s KnockOut Cup- Final 3
I really hate that kind of pretentious, portentous opening that A's going for. It just comes across really badly, some proper Ricky Gervais knuckle-biting car-crash type of thing. When it gets into it's loping, shuffling funk groove it's not too bad, quite understated given the horrific build-up. It's a pity there's been so much of this kind of thing in the 70s cup, because it's hard to judge it on its own merits, when you've heard the same 'epic' orchestration style for the 40th time. But I think this is further into the grounds of acceptability, even with the silly wind noises. It's persistent, never goes down another alleyway once it's up and running, and sometimes, I quite like that head-down and run with it attitude.
I appear to have found an image of Jesus in my cheese. Hard to know what this is from the intro, it's got that blues-rock swagger, but also some badly out of place flute action. Or pan-pipes, or recorder, or some kind of blowy shit that's not wanted. Or perhaps the blowy shit is all that's wanted, the rock thing isn't my thing. Almost forgot to mention the accordion. Accordion.
A, but really odd choice, B.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Ah, yeah. This is what you get when you're misguided enough to think that seeking out the unknown and the unheralded brings its own rewards. Some loonie piping away in Portuguese when not tooting away on a pipe is a very very long way from 'Marquee Moon' or 'What's Going On', isn't it?
FUCK OFF
FUCK OFF

B I actually liked it, nearest we've come to a rock song.
A was dire, really boring.

Liked both grooves.
Once again A is the one with a bit more song. I also like hearing Billy Paul's voice. A great artist who should be known for so much more than "Me and Mrs. Jones."

Too much jizzy blowing in both, I’m afraid.

Re: 70s KnockOut Cup- Final 3
What I love about A:
- The hypnotic Latin rhythm.
- The mesmerising way the strings and flute circle around the vocal line creating peaks of real drama.
- The passionate vocal.
For me it's a real 70s soul undiscovered gem, I love it when soul got all mystical in the early 70s, it makes for such evocative music. Once again I'm disappointed by how readily and quickly it's been dismissed, but I guess that's the nature of the game.
I actually have n album by B somewhere, but it never really stuck with me, maybe I should give it another go. I quite liked B although the tune didn't develop much. I liked the passion of the vocal, but some elements din't quite work for me. An attractive selection though.

Re: 70s KnockOut Cup- Final 3
a - fuck me, it's prog. Wasn't expecting that. Oh, and a Latin shuffle as well. Be still my heart. My feet certainly are. Flute and strings ≠ soul, no matter how you slice it. The vocal is OK – nothing more – but the backing not only doesn't float my boat, it rips a hole in the keel and puts it in the Mariana trench. More oog than oof. I listened to it all,and if I'd come across it when it was released I would probably have liked, but no thanks 3 / 10
b - fuck me, this one is flute-tastic as well. Or maybe panpipes. But it also has an accordion. And it's a bit more of a mess, which is a good thing, as is it being shorter. It's a bit more of a rock song than A, which isn't a good thing. 3 / 10
B because it's losing.

I like the Billy Paul track but it kind of lacks the presence you’d expect at this stage of the
championship.
B is full of accordion-propelled goodness!

I seem to have enjoyed both of these more than anyone that didn't actually pick them did but B's recorder/accordion combo just edges out A's hippy soulness.
