Re: 70s KnockOut Cup Tiebreak 2
Cheap Trick's exalted importance among my friends (and my wife!) has always bewildered me. I find that song dull. And it's from the period of Cheap Trick I like the most! They have a few classics, undeniably - "Surrender," "California Man," and maybe a few others, but their statuses as pop geniuses is a pretty wild stretch.
That said, B is pretty pointless. There was a definitive version already, and not only did they not improve on it, they didn't change it that much.
The playing and singing is certainly competent on both, but there's nothing there to get excited about at all.
A reluctant and unenthusiastic A, I guess.

Has this morphed into the Bizaro Cup or summat?
Fucking Ada - B as it is slightly less pointless/redundant than A.

A is not my thing..I'll leave it there.
B is only pointless if you take a closed minded, superficial reaction to it. The truth is it betters the original through a sharper production utilizing a huge, sweeping string arrangement and powerful backing vocals. The drumming and rhythm is more upfront too . The effect is to transform an already great song into something epic and cinematic. This is one of Eugene Record's great productions and truly immersive. Wonderful.

A is nothing but stodge. Fuck off, please.
B doesn't do anything to improve the original but as the original is an absolute masterpiece...you see where I'm going with this?

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Well, I love both. A for nostalgic reasons and it still makes me smile today, and B because the Chi-Lites' records were the fucking shit.

I had totally forgotten about A, and how much I liked it the few times I heard it. Thanx!

Tough one; liking both. But B is the kind of smooth sound I can actually get behind

A is one of those songs that sounds like it was written and recorded in ten minutes with a ’Teach Yourself Guitar Chords’ book. Melodically and sonically rudimentary and predictable.
B takes one of the great R&B songs of the era and turns it into a kind of groovy soup. I’d much rather hear the original but there are at least some ideas in the production here, an accusation that could never be levelled at Cheap Trick.

a - Cheap Trick always sound fresh to me, largely because I Want You to Want Me is the only song of theirs that I can remember hearing. I tend to like the rockier stuff, but this mid-tempo duffer is pants. 3 / 10
b - A cover of a 70s' 'song' by Marvin the Mumbler. Be still my heart and/or gag reflex. The Chi-lites were a great vocal group by my lights, so this is bound to be better than the original, but in truth the 'song' drags them back a bit. Still, enough to win here. 4 / 10

A is dull. And when it went into its predictable slow bit… I hate songs that do that. It really is a cheap trick.
I ended up liking B. The vocal ensemble treatment.
