Re: 70s KnockOut Cup Tiebreak 1
I was about to quit A after two minutes but I'm glad I didn't cause that's when many interesting things started to happen in the background. Lovely track.
B was fine too, but this evening I feel more like

Re: 70s KnockOut Cup Tiebreak 1
Who cares about the rhythm section? I bloody well do when it's Danny Thompson on bass, fer chrissakes. Cruel Sister is Pentangle's finest album, and one of the absolute greatest folk albums of the 60s and 70s. There's so much going on in this track, I don't know how anyone can accuse it of being too trad. Sure, Jacqui's (superb) vocals are taking on a traditional ballad, but that jazzy bass hot-footing around the place, Renbourn's sitar floating in and out, it's hardly trying to recreate the past. It's a fleet-footed thing of beauty. That production job is pristine, too.
B's not bad, but it's very, very in thrall to Ultravox! It perhaps has an overtone of Roxy, too. It doesn't feel that it gets to really go anywhere, when you expect a chorus, nothing happens. It's a very empty kind of song, and the way it peters out at the end doesn't do it any favours.
A by a country mile.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

In a nutshell... A it is.
and I'm still hoping to find the Pentangle box set at an acceptable price.

I love how these songs bookend the 70's, A from 1970 and B from '79. A has such a delightful arrangement with lovely tinkling percussion and the sitar accompanying the finger picking guitar.
B is a solid non-obvious choice from Numan from his all too brief purple patch during 1979 when he released two terrific albums. Grace Jones does a nice version too.

A's got too much feeling and B too little. A is for Albion, B is for Britain. New over ancient. B

I think I made my feelings pretty plain on how superior Pentangle are, so lets just go with that.

OK, since this has ended in a tie again, the deciding factor will be the total amount of votes in favor of the players during this KnockOut Cup....
Trans Chigley Express- Round 1: 17 votes, Round 2: 19 votes, TB 13= 49 votes.
Harvey K-Tel: Round 1, 15 votes, Round 2 19 votes, TB 13 votes= 47 votes.
That means Trans Chigley Express advances to the next round.

Sorry Harvey, that’s a very unfortunate way to lose but it’s been a titanic battle and I honestly thought I was doomed at one point with eight consecutive votes for Tubeway Army but somehow managed to claw my way back. I feel like a cat with nine lives.

I agree. It was a tough decision to make.
I will keep your next track in reserve though since I am still waiting for two players to cough up their next track....

Ah well, I understand you can't keep this competition going on indefinitely, n/e, and props to Trans-Chigley Express - I hope you make it through the next round with fewer bitten nails!!
Thanks again for all your effort, Maarts.
