Re: 70s KnockOut Cup- SS 4
In a way I'm surprised that William Onyeabor isn't more of a cult within those kind of musical circles. His music, what I've heard anyway, is every bit as eccentric and sonically experimental as, say, Lee Perry. A takes a bit of getting used to with its lo-fi Cassio keyboard sound, but it becomes more immersive and hypnotic as it goes on. I love the dubby feel it has in the instrumental section with the instruments dropping in and out over that voodoo groove. Great choice.
I've always loved 'Memo From Turner' . One of Jagger's most colourful lyrics which he sings with a seedy relish and Ry Cooder's slide is great. Not the freshest of selections though and it does feel a bit like crowbarring a 60s track into the competition (although technically it's fine as it wasn't released until 1970). I'm not punishing it for the latter though, but voting positively for A

Had not heard either one before, but while A is a pleasant surprise and loads of fun, B sounds a bit stodgy. A

Re: 70s KnockOut Cup- SS 4
Both great choices. I was trying to do a bit of research on Onyeabor while listening to the track, 'cause it sounded to me like he may have played all the instruments himself, which definitely would've tipped the scales in his favour, but I couldn't confirm it. If anybody knows more about him, I'd love to hear it.
I love the sleazy vibe of Memo... even though Mick's sniggering through the lyrics ticks me off a bit. It's a fantastic sounding track and was probably a blast to record. It's just a shame he had to sing about a sleeveless shirt in the first verse. Because of that I'm giving it to A.

This is a bit more like it.
I've always liked A but haven;t heard it for ages. It is overly long but I do like the section where things are dropping in and out, and the backing holding it steady throughout.
B is a solid choice - without eve being in the top echelon. I do like Jagger's vocal styling though.
Difficult but I think I'd rather hear A again.

If I'm totally honest, I admire A more than I actually like it, and B, though obvious, is undeniable. Jagger's best solo moment by miles.

Re: 70s KnockOut Cup- SS 4
Hmm, A sounds like some kind of bedroom recording, which normally appeals. The sound is really muddy though, that keyboard sound is horrible and tinny, and that hi-hat thing is properly annoying, like it's been added as an afterthought with no connection to the main drumline. It's akin to a less competent version of The Space Lady, albeit with presumably original tunes and a funkier bass. Eight minutes of this is pushing my tolerance, having said that. I was expecting it to piss off, having said all that it was going to say, but it's persisting without any rhyme or reason.
B's not normally the kind of thing I'd listen to, either, I mean, I wouldn't listen to Stones of the 70s, so solo-Jagger seems unlikely. That slide guitar has something quite joyful about it though, and the farty bassline seems perfectly suited to the groove their going for. The vocal sounds very Dylanesque, if Dylan spent a lot of time being drunk and hanging around strip bars. Actually has a lot more going for it than I anticipated.

At last a couple of songs that I can get behind. A is a tad overlong perhaps but I can really get into it's groove. B is a very decent track with a convincing swagger but it's A I'm most like to return to.

Re: 70s KnockOut Cup- SS 4
a ooh, 8 and a half minutes of not someone else's thing. Oh, nice tenor voice. Not so keen on the choppy backing. Oh, there's some more voices. And is that Farfisa? Don't hear them often in black music, more likely that fat Hammond sound. Oh, chopped effects guitar. That's a pity. they're getting down, and so is my appreciation of the track. Oh, a bass and drum solo. Elvin Jones and Richard Davis (or indeed Jet Harris and Tony Meehan) they ain't. This jam is thin and watery and lacking in fruit and pectin. Oh, I just read some of the words and they're hippyshit. How sweet. Maybe he's caught Stevie Wonder Disease. This is a real curate's egg, good and distasteful bits jostling around in my brain pan. Nice vocals, strings and keyboards, nasty g,b,d. Two metronomes and Bert Weedon would have more soul. Hm. 5 / 10
b - I don't think I ever owned this, but certainly heard a fair amount of it in the early 1970s. Maybe one of my flatmates had it, and of course I've seen the movie. Anyway, I never minded old Liver-Lips, it's a perky lyric, Ry Cooder actually makes an interesting noise at the beginning, but it sounds a bit tame now as it goes on 5 / 10
There's no point in trying to promote a tie in a knock-out cup, so if I don't come back later, read this as an abstain
Edit, listened again, A shades it
