B a bit of a surprise here for me. Some years ago I heard a Loudon Wainwright III album that I really didn't like at all and so I've avoided his music since. This was a good song that I liked a lot.
Led Zeppelin they're no Greta Van Fleet are they?

One of my least favourite tracks on PG. Really tedious. Sorry. Despite seeing them a few times, I am not really a massive fan. I happy with LZ1 and LZ2 - that's about it really.... I don't think some of their stuff has aged very well.
The likes of Sabbath, Budgie and Purple have faired better to my old ears.
I have a couple of Loudon albums back from the time - it was quite cool to 'dig that stuff'
This is a delightful track full of music, robust and seminal.

I'll take the simple stark beauty of B over A's brutal bombast any day.

I imagine this is the sort of stuff they play in the pub at those London 'jolly ups'. Boring old shit for cunts

Blimey, A takes its time to get going. I don't know if it's trying to build a sense of anticipation, or if the band had just run out of steam. It's less bombastic and offensive to these ears than the previous LZ track. But it's also more tedious.
I only really know anything of Loudon Wainwright because he occasionally popped up in episodes of Mash. I don't recall being particularly impressed by him, but this song feels quite nice. It feels very lo-fi, possibly a home recording. It's got the kind of sound that you expect from one of those "lost" folk albums that occasionally become found, particularly on the vocal. There's something about music that's just guitar and vocal with no embellishments, and there's not been nearly enough of that in the 70s selections so far.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

A is full of self-important “build-up” and beating about the bush and stuff.

I quite like the mood and Plant's yearning vocal, but it does feel like it's building up to something that never comes.
Musically B was a pallid Dylan ripoff, lyrically it was a very 70s mix of sleaze and self pity.

A is an odd pick from PG, one of those songs that shout for some editting. B is a lovely track, although the sound of that video is quite poor, better listen to it here. In any case

B was pleasant enough but can't really compete with the might Zep here and one of my favorites from PG

A - Foo! Semolina! Rabbits. .
I'm not listening to these Cunts.
No mark
b - Ah, Mr Kate McGarrigle. A couple of friends of mine were fans of his in the 1970s, so I probably have heard this before, although of course I don't remember. His saving grace among the plague of 'acoustic guitar troubadours' was that he had a sense of humour, but this rather dodgy tale of (?attempted?) statutory rape/adultery has few yucks in it. Truth to tell, I found it rather poor, but it has nothing to beat. 3 / 10

A is a 6 minute wank with no money shot. In no way can B ever be related to anything sexual.
Risible selections both. It’s a 10 minute cold bath for me.

Yeah, I know what I said about Zep just a few rounds ago. OK, so A isn't exactly obscure. But it's one of the more underrated tracks from my favorite Zep album. Rich in what they're good at - economy, sustained mood, drums that are simultaneously powerful and delicate - and low in what they're bad at - bluster, squealy vocals, lack of cohesion...So maybe it's no "What's the New Maryjane" but it's at least "No Reply" rather than "Can't Buy Me Love." Or something like that.
Anyway, if you're gonna pick Loudon, it's not like B is any less obvious. I like the song OK, but he has many better ones, and most of them weren't covered by BIg Star. I would've voted for "Me and My Friend the Cat." Or "Red Guitar." Or maybe even "Dead Skunk." Not this one.

I like that Led Zep one. It doesn't have a massive chorus or riff but it's got a magnetism and power.

i do have my love for some loudon, and it's pretty cool to see one of his tracks here, but it's not really a standout to me. the zep track is. top five for me. i really don't get the flak zep is getting for this track. i agree with hatz. it's underrated. it has a depth and a movement to it that floats my parade. i think it's rich and wonderful.
