Re: 70s KnockOut Cup Match 8
I never went as far down the Ramones discography as their second album, I bought the first and figured that was all the Ramones I need. I reckon I'm probably right with that. I mean, this is ok and all, but it's like the Big Star track of the previous round, I don't know what could drag me back to listen to it for a second time. It's kind of an ephemeral fluff, pleasant, but intrinsically uninvolving.
Within 5 seconds of B, I knew I was going to vote for A. This kinda bluesy bluster is kryptonite to me. I don't even know what to write about it, it's a rock song done by a rock band, in all its rocky rockiness. It says nothing to me.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Whoever chose this Brudders tune needs a serious shoeing. Its bubblegum, but the type that gets stuck on your Cons and is really annoying to shift.
A is hoary old toss but at least its got a frisson of excitement about it and you can see they are enjoying themselves. I don't think the Ramones ever enjoyed themselves.
B. Embrace the rockist tendency!

B one of Zeppelin's best riffs plus pounding Bonham drums. Let's fucking rock!
The Ramones are just one trick ponies, and admittedly it's a good one most of the time. Not one of their better efforts though.

Having trouble getting excited about either of these, to be honest.
I'll go for B, I think, because it's more uplifting than a song about rape.

I'm struggling a bit here. I've become a Zep convert over the years, but that's them at their dullest. The Ramones track was also pretty by the rote stuff.

I had hopes for that Ramones song as I didn't remember it, but it sucked.
One of my favorite Zep songs, the break is great and unexpected in such a hard rocking song and it segues from the main riff to two different rhythms after that.

A is rotten - one of the weediest, silliest things to come off those pretty-good early albums
I'm not wild keen on that Led Zep performance but it's an easy win here

Difficult... it’s hardly the most distinguished Ramones track. But despite the cunning riffage from the Zep, the Ramones’ guitars still sound better.

An average Ramones tune that is nice to hear if you are into that thing, as I do. Too bad it was paired against Zep at the heigth of their powers, and that's hardly beatable.

Again, two bands that i love at times, but two selections that are not personal faves. Ramones do enough here though.

The Ramones track is very limp and sounds like they tossed it off during a quick tea break, which, to be fair, they probably did.
B is about only the 5th or 6th best track from Houses of the Holy but still wins by a considerable landslide.

a - A middling track from their second-best album (Road to Ruin wins it) by the greatest American band of the last 40-odd years. 7.5 / 10
B- ooooooh, laminates, bustier, stubsrillaroorama
I'm not listening to these bores, the desecrator of Boleskine in particular. I mean, just look at the cunts.

Like others, I have one Ramones album. If I want to hear the Ramones, which is not that often, I can play that album. They are fun for ten minutes but very overrated, aren't they?
Led Zep are always a bit hit-and-miss for me and I prefer their earlier work, which to me feels more folky and has more light and shade; I'm less keen on them in stadium-struttin' riff-rockin' crotch-thrustin' De-Niro-face-pullin' form. This one's got enough punch to its classic LZ sauropod-groove to win this tie, though.

Re: 70s KnockOut Cup Match 8
I must confess I've always liked A a great deal. Not a pleasant subject matter, of course, but I do think there's something subversive in the way it takes sappy pop cliches (right down to the Beatlized title, which is a stroke of genius) and exposes the violence that lurks beneath them. Or at least that's how I take it.
B is great - well, the studio version is, anyway - this is nice but doesn't differ enough to warrant choosing - but picking them at all in a 70s cup is a lot like picking the Beatles in a 60s cup - I mean, unless you're going to pick "What's the New Maryjane" or something. Which this isn't the equivalent of.
