What a fabulous pair of songs again!

That Equals tune is one of those I remember really vividly - I just had to check to make sure it was a 70's release to be fair.... great powerful track, with lyrics which were (at the time) pretty challenging. Love it.

But... God I love the Macca tune. It's one of the truly great 70's releases from him.... it's crazy and convoluted and I'm still completely unaware what it's all about. But it works brilliantly.

A really difficult decision but.... I think I have to go B.

A qualifies for the 70s cup by the skin of its teeth!

I've alway loved A's energy, it's a real electric shock of a track, like a Glam take on James Brown.
I'm getting more tolerant of Macca's more whimsical side in the last few years. Parts of B are like aural honey - warm and vaguely opiated. It's all rather slight, but also comforting and charming in its way.

It's close but A

I always liked "Uncle Albert", but not so much "Admiral Halsey". Still.....

The Fall stole a line from 'Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys' for 'No Xmas For John Quays', oddly. Anyway I might not have heard it (before this match) if not for that.

It's good, but the other is one of those mini-masterpieces McC popped out every so often during the decade. I can't vote against it

The Equals are going big with the vocal effort here, reminds me of Edwin Starr the amount of oomph whassisface (Eddy Grant, wasn't it?) is putting into the performance. A big stomper, relentless, attitude. Boom. Gets in, sticks the boot in, and fucks off early. I like that.

I've probably made my feelings fairly clear on Paul McCartney. For all my Beatles-hating, I'm largely just apathetic to most of their music, it's just the lack of imagination in discussing them endlessly that annoys me. When it comes to McCartney solo though, I seriously can't think of anything I'd rather listen to less. This is a big fucking mess of absolute shit from the off. Dreary primary school assembly singalong bollocks which suddenly turns into a bouncy nursery rhyme with wacky voices. I'd rather sit through 5 hours of prog than this abomination.

Uncle Albert does absolutely nothing for me. Sickly, insipid, tedious. lacking in music and underwhelming. Other than that is ok.

The Equals I've heard umpteen times over the years and it has never done very much for me.

It's better than the other 'erberts though

A very reluctant -+A+-

a - of course I know this pretty well, as it was ubiquitous at a time when I still watched TOTP. I can't say I thought much of it at the time and I'm still not particularly anamoured of it as a museum piece. The band are nothing much - that's a pretty basic, and ultimately dully repetitive, attempt at an urgent funk sound, and to this day I still don't know what exactly Eddie is on about in the lyrics, although I'm sure it's very worthy. 4 / 10
b - thought I better listen to this as, while Himself is on my list, Linda isn't. Jiminy criminy, though, she has got a particularly tuneless voice, hasn't she? And the rest of it, whimsiBeatleshit. One and a half minutes will do. No mark

I picked A in a normal cup a few years back. It’s a belter and I’m voting for it. Sorry Paul and Linda.

I don’t mind the Macca(s), reminds me of car trips listening to Wings Greatest with my folks. It’s nice to hear it every now and again. But it’s clearly not as good as A, even if I’d have preferred Police On My Back.

No way I'm voting against A - one of the best songs by one of the most underrated bands of...well, the 60s, mostly.

B is the most obvious track from the most BCB-overrated album this side of Stone Roses, in addition to still being overplayed on radio here. If it was "Too Many People" I might have to think about it. But this? Easiest choice ever.

I've never heard A before and it made an immediate impression, very, tight, immediate and vital sounding. Excellent pick

B is one of my favourite things from the 70s ever.

I like 'Uncle Albert' musically, it's got a sophistication and tenderness that's rare with the subtlety-free Macca, but the vocals and sound effects are a sticking point for me. 'Admiral Halsey' is one of his stupid old knees-up jams and can bugger off. The man had so much talent and so little taste.
I think A is decent rather than great, but at least it doesn't sabotage itself as often as Sir Thumbsaloft does.
