Re: 70s Cup Grand Final Match 5
There are bits of A that I like: the first couple of minutes with the ominously throbbing bass and jazzy drums, together with the faintly eerie guitar arpeggios, are very effective. But the vocals are weedy and the proggy breakdowns feel a bit routine and dull. Some nice background atmospherics come in, but they're difficult to enjoy as someone is playing with a whoopee cushion in the recording booth. Nah, you had your chance and you blew it, lads.
Magazine again? That's what, three or four songs now, one of them twice. As I may or may not have mentioned on one of the other ties - I can't be bothered checking - I burned out on them some time ago, but this is a very fine example of their thing. They make arty disillusionment and brash synth sounds so catchy. The bits where the guitars crash in and the riff smooths out are splendid.

A was better than I was expecting after reading the comments. I enjoyed it's ominous sounding atmospherics and quite liked the plinky plonk wild west piano coda but it was let down by the couldn't-care-less half assed vocal.
B is already a favourite so is always at an advantage immediately here and although A exceeded my expectations I have to go with B

Re: 70s Cup Grand Final Match 5
that magazine track irritated me and enthused me in equal measure. enthused won out a lil more as it went along.
meanwhile, i love the faust track, its vibe, the movement to more distortion. yeah, the silly piano bit at the end was, well, silly and felt tacked on, but it didn't actually come close to irritating me, certainly not enough to detract what came before it. in a weird way, it may even be the right coda. hafta think more on that one. mwhaha.

I enjoyed A - the 'choruses' were really nice, and the droney bits were good too. Vocals were a bit meh, but I liked the throbbing bass.
B was okay, but felt a bit underworked, especially in the turnarounds between chorus and verse. But whatever...

kicks in with an amazing three part intro - I remember Magazine being "too progressive" for Garry Bushell. Fuck me, Ain't Got A Clue by the Lurkers would have been too fancy for that twat.

A difficult match, so hard to compare these tracks and I liked both. I was expecting something more unlistenable in A but it was quite nice to hear, and I found the piano part in the end an integral and perfectly fitting piece to the track. The Magazine tune was nice too but today, rather unexpectedly, I feel more like

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Re: 70s Cup Grand Final Match 5
I quite like this matchup. A seems to predict a lot of the indie/slowcore/post-rock stuff we'd see in the 90s and so on, but does it with something of a lightness of touch that elevates it from the average of those successors. Well, before it develops into more Resident-like territory towards the last third, but that only makes it more enjoyable to my ears. I dig the Magazine too, it's got a nice tune going for it though in this match it does come across as the 'squarer' sounding track. So, A.

Re: 70s Cup Grand Final Match 5
This is a proper contest and by the far the best in the Final so far, but Magazine are simply outclassed by anything off Faust IV. Going with A.

4 was the first Faust-album I bought, mainly for Krautrock but this pre-shoegazing symphony is good.
Magazine is not really shaking the thunder from the sky on this one. It's decent though.
