A is interesting and one can see the influence on a ton of 90's indie in it...Vote A

Re: 70s Cup Final Round Match 11
I really dislike both choices, sorry.
I know the Judee Sill song is supposed to some kind of classic, I've read a couple of BCBers talk it up over the years and there have been pieces in the monthlies. I'm sure she was talented and sweet and sensitive and all that but the thing bores me rigid
I went into the Van track expecting it to be a bit better (altho' I'm no fan) but when I heard that stuffy Last Waltz muso bluster, and then his scat singing atop, it did for me. Awful old racket with a Paddy wanker and his mindless jazz piddling about - really really awful shit

I went through a phase about 10 years ago of listening to Sill, but had semi forgotten about her. This reminds me she really did have something special, there's an angelic, other-worldly quality to her music. I found this achingly beautiful. One of the best selections in the cup -thanks A.
The Van one( I don't know if we're meant to be voting on this live version specifically) was okay, he sounds like he's having fun anyway, but nothing like the depth of soul of A.

B a Van Morrison classic from his best album, in my opinion, Moondance. Odd decision to go with this live version though.

When I was a student, I had a friend who I fancied desperately. One day, he asked me if I wanted to see Van Morrison because he had a spare ticket. I said yes, not because I liked VM, but because I thought maybe something could happen between us - possibly during ' Brown Eyed Girl ' as I am a brown eyed girl myself. It was such a surprising evening- the gig was fab and joyful.
So I have some affection for VM, even though this isn't the best ( and I never did get to interfere with my companion )

Van... eight and a half minutes... live... 'scat' singing for half of it (seemingly).....
Or anything fucking else?

The vocal treatment on A is annoying, all that reverb, it just makes it sound like she's backed by a robot at times. The strings lay on the syrup a bit too thickly again. This kind of unsubtle production just rubs me up the wrong way.
It's better than that travesty of B though.

The live version of a great Van track has been ruined on this overlong, somewhat tedious, version - an odd decision.
Judee Sill I haven't ever 'got' - a nice enough voice but she rarely hits the spot.
A difficult decision as it is not an 'abstain' and certainly not a 'pass'
Stalemate

i've only ever seen van live with the chieftains (leave me alone. loved the show.) this live van track ends up being a mixed bag. i love the original, but this *is* overly long, and i don't like van's scatting. nice sections, the strings and whatnot. but on the whole, not an inspiring version.
i've never heard A... and like loki, i thought it was lovely.

Nothing against Van but I really liked A and it's the first time I've heard this particular song

I enjoy both tracks a lot. A is absolutely beautiful, I wish we'd had more of this kind of singer-songwriters instead of Tim Buckley. Everything from the voice to the production and the arragement works nicely and fits perfectly.
I am quite fond of It's Too Late to Stop Now, and Caravan is one of my fave tracks in it. This is not exactly the same take (I checked) but it's quite close, the sound just a bit worse. Not sure it works in isolation as well as at the end of the album as it is located. In any case I still like it and just because it needs more love I'll vote for it, with apologies to A

Like these both a lot, but I've heard A a few hundred times less.

I was thinking about JS as i was making my list up, so i'm glad this pick is here. Her voice is not always what i want, but this one is spot-on. B is Van at his least enjoyable for me.

Re: 70s Cup Final Round Match 11
Judee Sill has a nice voice but something about the production and style felt too schmaltzy for me; parts of it sounded a little too much like music for a romantic film montage, although the more understated passages had a woozy, strange appeal.
I like Van Morrison less the more I hear him. I love Astral Weeks but it's downhill from there. This one just had too much of a "bar room jam session" feel to it, although there were a couple of nice instrumental breaks.
A?

a - lord knows I'm not part of the Judee Sill worshipers' faction – I mean, Jesus was a Cross-Maker ffs (no he wasn't, but that's the least of its sins) - but, seeing as what she's up again here, she's pretty much a shoo-in, but lordy, this is another dreary junky moan. 2.5 / 10
b - ah, Van the Flan. And live, too - be still my heart. Well, I was buying this guy's records through much of the 1980s, until I finally realized that he'd peaked with Mystic Eyes with Them, with a lesser foothills solo shakedown with Brown-Eyed Girl, and after that, all guff. Guff with some nice tunes and the odd bell and whistle on occasion, granted, but he's certainly no great shakes as a poet - Astral Weeks my arse - and not much of a human being. You'd think that someone with his wealth and dentition would have known better than to eat with his mouth open in a public place (I know this has little to do with this number, but if you had to share a cafe with him on more than one occasion it would alter any positive view you held of him too). He's a ferociously ugly, grumpy, moany cabbage too, not to mention completely up his own fat arse.
I suppose I better play the record, too. Nah, 15 seconds in, and I've already heard the best bit, the smattering of applause. Of course, I know the number, and I can imagine the rest. Lasted one minute. Fuck right off, on to my list you go. 2 / 10
