A is a decent bit of post-punk-pop but I found the violin unnecessary and obtrusive; it put me off the song instead of enhancing it.
I've never listened to much Cat Stevens but I find he invariably makes a nice sound even if it doesn't grip me. This one is pretty with some much more appropriate fiddling, although the vocal and lyric are a bit twee.

A closer tie than I thought. I like the early Ultravox-albums a lot, Stevens I can take or leave but that was a good track selection.
Still going with my boys though...

I always want to like Cat Stevens more than I actually do. Ultravox! is getting too close to the Midnight Oil sound for comfort with A, but some of the passages have enough of a pulse to them to scrape this one. A

a - I was never into either incarnation of Ultravox, but at leas John Foxx isn't sporting a comedy moustache. The violin helps the medicine go down in my view. I bought plenty of Psychedelic Furs singles, so I'm not quite sure why I never got into them before. Maybe the theatricality and the frankly silly lyrics, which I can actually hear for once. I ended up actually liking it – what the fuck's wrong with me tonight? 6 / 10
b - listening to him, you'd never think that was the voice of a Bubble who grew up in Soho. Several of the people I interviewed for Up West remembered him well. Never really liked his albums: rather like Donovan, he abandoned his single pop smarts for something 'artier' that comes over a bit twee without compensatory ramshackle charm. Not for me (whew, thank Dog I got my anti-Mojo mojo back. 3 / 10
