I think Cale lost it big time after Fear. Those mid-to-late 70s Island albums contain the sort of things that would have been rejected by the label if he hadn't been who he was. Not a single decent track on any of them, he'd lost his muse to the booze, and the voice was gone altogether.

I rather liked the production and keyboard sounds of A, but it was a bit of a chore sadly, all too forced and didactic in its desire to make a "big statement". You feel if Cale had been forced to listen to "uptown Top Ranking" before going into the studio he might not have made such a heavy-handed job of it.

A is a slog of a dirge, but it's better than the mundane stylings of B....Marginal vote for A

A John Cale snoozefest up against one of the great 70's singles?

8 minutes of A? No thanks.
B, fortunately, is a ramshackle pop beauty.

I like solo Cale a lot and don't think he really lost it till the mid 80s, but that period's pretty inconsistent, and that particular song is a bit of a slog. I might have voted for "Chicken Shit" or "Mercenaries (Ready For War)."
B is great, and I understand people's affection for it, but are we done with reggae now?? Let it happen someday, pretty please.

Why? It was a major genre of the 70s in the same way prog or punk or disco were. It was always much bigger in the UK than the US in the 70s though and so perhaps that's coming into play here

Why?
Mainly 'cause of my usual complaint - the level of predictability. There has been a tune or two I'm unfamiliar with, but people are mostly going with stuff even I know well - and I like most of it but don't consider myself any kind of expert on the genre.
I like CSNY too (for the most part) but that's the other thing that has been coming up more than I think it deserves.
Give me a great song I've never heard before that wasn't a UK hit, or from The Harder they Come and isn't one of the top dozen or so known artists and all is forgiven...

I like many things from John Cale and A is no exception, but I agree that it goes on for far too long.
Reggae played a very minor part of the 70s in my neck of the woods, so for me this overwhelming presence in this cup is totally unexpected. B is one of the finest pieces offered here and I don't mind it at all. But it does not beat

Same as everyone else: I like John Cale and I think he did a lot of fine solo work, but this one is ponderous and ugly.
And same as everyone else: I wish people would have dug a bit deeper for their reggae, but this one is irresistible all the same.
