Robbie Basho one of the most underrated talents of all time.
From his album Visions of the Country I recall
Great guitar playing influenced by the mighty sarod - stunning vocals too
Up against another ordinary reggae track - no contest

B a reggae classic that I've always liked.
As For Robbie Basho, a better track than the one that appeared in an earlier round. An acquired taste?

A is kind of interesting - but hardly gripping
B is a bona fide classic - not that that's a reason to vote for it, I like it anyway.
But seriously - enough reggae already

Is this the round of the weird vocal?
I'm sure A is a good tune - it was just uncomfortable to listen to.
B still sounds great.

B is landmark reggae that's going to win. But the usual "obvious" complaints apply. If A sucked, that'd be one thing. But he's an interesting/unique guitarist, and he sings much better on this than the last Basho track we heard.

Just look at that picture of Basho, he's proper staring down some bastard who's spilled his pint, whilst protecting a picture of Pegasus. That's a hard look to capture. Ok, I think I've already made it clear in the earlier round how much I love Basho. This is a track from the same album, but here he's concentrating far less on the guitar intricacies (not that they're lacking), but on the power of a simple song. Much like Buckley, the powerful, mannered vocal really works with that simpler backing. To me it's just a transcendent imagining of being at one with nature at night, and it's all captured in the pure tone if his voice.
Standard reggae standard, innit. Not for me, not against the sheer beauty of A

Hmmm, A was OK here, but I preferred the other Basho track earlier in the competition: this one was a more bog-standard pluckin' 'n strummin' affair, with his wibbly vocals and a faint droning quality giving it some eeriness.
The theme with the cup's reggae picks has been that they are either the most famous songs or generic background cuts. B is the former, with a powerful vocal and some nice restrained brass.

I prefer the singing in this Robbie Basho track over the one in the previous round, although the playing is less impresive. And the song is appealing in its way.
Probably it's not B's fault that I'm fed up with reggae for the next five years, but I am. I tried be fair and to listen without considering this, but anyway the song did not move me much.

I can see Robbie Basho's voice being less of an issue the more you're exposed to it. In fact his voice was probably the best thing in A, or at least the thing that kept me listening. But musically it was a little plain and underdeveloped.
'Marcus Garvey' has never been a big favourite with me, but it's good. It has a certain conviction to it.

I liked both but A was a tad more interesting choice.

Re: 70s Cup Round 8 Match 7
i have more problems with this basho track. the last one had such impressive, stunning gweetar work. this one kinda stays in one-chord city until the second half, when more changes come in, pretty ones. and i still like his voice.
but i dunno about B. maybe, like osgood, my reggae tolerance is getting stretched. no fault of the picker's, of course. maybe it's burning spear (i wasn't all that moved by the last one, either.) it's okay and all, but it sounds more like noisy reggae as opposed to sweet reggae. i prefer sweet.
maybe in the end, it's just me, mwhaha.
i'll go with basho... and with some reservations.
