i like "lumpen" rock/prog mixes with mad vocalists myself. i am rather fond of this track and this album. (by the way, penk, american teenagers in the midwest weren't listening to pavlov's dog. they were listening to kansas. get it straight.)
at the same time, i love aretha. i could listen to her anywhere, anytime.
it's a ruff call for me.
this morning?
i'm in the mood for aretha.

Although Pavlov's is a lot more interesting than I had expected, my allegiance is to the Queen of Soul. B

a - as I mentioned before, back in the day I really liked Sandy Pearlman's groups and production, which is why I got into Pavlov's Dog (I actually own At the Sound of the Bell as well as Pampered Menial) in the 1970s. And I love David Surkamp's absurd vibrato-laden voice (an old doo-wopper like me is hardly likely to be upset by a high tenor or falsetto, after all). This is not my favourite song from PM (that would be Natchez Trace), but it has plenty of presence, and I always like the stately way they constructed and arranged their better songs. I like that discordant piano intro for instance, the iteration of the riff, and then the wobbly wailing starts, an electric violin solo before they let the guitarist get some personal relief. I probably haven't listened to this for a quarter century, but it still unfolded nicely in my memory. (and I'd like to register a protest about Surkamp being compared with that subhuman Geddy Lee of the Rand-fondling filth) - 7 /10
B - Aretha's total oeuvre as the BCB massive in general, but this one, which sounds new to me, is rather lovely. I think she sounds better on light pop songs such as this , Angel or I Say a Little Prayer, or pure gospel, than the more, ahem, robust soul numbers that made her name. This has a refined girl group sound about it, and the outro is just beautiful - 7 / 10
In common with the usual practice - A

A's like Who-wannabe era Rush with Geddy Lee's voice processed through a frequency oscillator of some sort, pretty rancid stuff. B takes this one even as I feel there's several better Aretha tracks to pick too.

A is an abomination. I normally love vocals which are unhinged and unique but this one irritates me to my core and it's laid on top of some very plodding crappy dad rock.
B is tolerable.

Aretha against David Surkamp...
I don't like her song much, so I'll give it to A - a very bold choice!

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
