Hell fire, this is a grim pairing. A is horrid, really poor mix of overblown orchestration, prog nonsense, fiddles and pointless strumming, it’s everything bad about 70s rock. B is almost equally horrible, particularly so when you consider this is a Roxy offshoot. I picked Eno earlier in the Cup but this is a stodgy mess. It can count itself extremely lucky that I’ve not abstained here.

Lots of psychedelic noodling (which I frankly find to be quite amiable, actually) leading up to it, but it's a killer riff and I find the whole thing a lot more engaging than B, which is kind of aimless and hamfisted by comparison (though it was probably fun live).

A is really kind of an overture and a rather goofy one at that. I've always liked it. Also has pleasant memories for me as it was used as theme music for a local sports show I very much enjoyed. Can you see Eno writing something that a sports show could use as theme music? Maybe for curling.

1. no, it isn't just you. i love the ELO track.

2. i did enjoy a lot of B, the gweetar sound in particular.

3. watch it on the curling. curling rocks. i have two tiny curling stones as christmas tree ornaments. (long story, never mind, etc.)

Hey, that ELO track wasn't bad at all.

But I still prefer Manzanera's heavy riffage

I like a lot of the symphonic work of ELO, especially Concerto For A Rainy Day and this overture, if a bit less direct is a lot of fun.
Eno is a staplemark in my diet but I can take or leave some of his projects, 801 included. So I'll give this to

Oh dear. Normally, I wouldn't listen to either of these bands on general principles. Still, hazmat suit on, and a fortifying bong... Hang on lads, I'm going in.
a - Jesus H flapdoodle criminy, how I wish I were listening to Wizzard right now. Oh for fuck's sake, fuck off back to Brummie pretension school Lynne, you fucking fuckwit. Two minutes of this portentous garbage is enough. Semen stains. Tubs of dogshit. As robust and attractive as a brick-built cesspit. A FUCKING ASSAULT ON ALL THAT IS DECENT. No mark. Ugh
b - As far as I can tell, no Brummies were involved in the making of this track. The very idea of an early 70s supergroup is anathema to me, but I always liked Manzanera's guitar, and indeed have no problems with Eno, so two and half minutes of this is enough (two and a half nanoseconds, truth be told) to win this. something / 10

A resounding B

A - a rather beautiful instrumental. Lots of pop overtures with great hooks. Not the ELO I tend to play anymore.

B- wait this is two songs? Funny I love the other three songs on the b side of the album. Still Manzanera's guitar and I heart Eno's vocals
