Who'd have thought, before this Cup kicked off, that the most-represented genre would in fact NOT be punk, or new wave, or glam, but reggae?
A's really nice, but I've got to give it to
B
the best track off his worst album - but it's a lovely thing with a beautiful sighing vocal from CB

B crikey, the good Captain's take on a Bob Seger style song?
I quite like A, but am not going to engage in virtue-signalling. There's too much of that on BCB already.

I've always loved "Silly Games" and can't understand the somewhat muted responses to it so far. It has a really beguiling and sensual melody and production with Kay's soprano reading of the chorus really achieving something special.
B has a lovely, atmospheric production but the song itself is dreadfully monotonous, it doesn't develop any melodic ideas at all, but just repeats itself interminably. I think Beefheart is one of those guys who will pick up default votes whatever is picked, but A seems clearly superior to me.

The Captain
oof. Robust. Seminal. Tubs. Good lad
A weaker track from Don's weakest album still beats the competition

Re: 70s Cup Round 7 Match 4
I love both of these, a good and fascinating match-up.
Eh? What is that supposed to mean, PB? How is voting for a warm, reggae-tinged dance ballad virtue-signaling?
The Captain had such a great voice, when he chose to sing like this or in his more "out-there" style, and this track is a little gem for me. But i feel like signaling some of my virtues; y'all can choose which ones they are.

Re: 70s Cup Round 7 Match 4
So this is the match on which we're hanging our virtuous signals? Color me confused. Is she Jamaican? English? American? I honestly don't know. It's a slight but enjoyable piece of pop reggae. And B is no better or worse for being one of my musical heroes. I would've picked "Party of Special Things to Do," personally, but this is also a enjoyable piece of fluff. Should I pick the actual black person doing an inferior song over the more talented white artist who's built at least part of his reputation on sounding black? Nah.

It's not an inferior song, melodically it's far stronger.

Re: 70s Cup Round 7 Match 4
I am going to SIGNAL MY VIRTUES by voting for the sweet, enjoyable pop-reggae of A ahead of B, which has a great sound but does nothing with it. The dealbreaker is that A has one of those startlingly odd vocals that seem to have died out in pop music, while B sounds like Beefheart can't be arsed.

When I came over to the UK for the first time, summer of '79, Silly Games was a big hit. Never liked it either.

1/2 half of both songs goes to A really like the pop vocals reggae but the second half of A drags and the second half of the Captain lights up and shines.
