Stop it already.
Miserable hotch potch of half formed ideas from XTC versus one of the all time classics? Really.

Re: 70s Cup Round 3 Match 13
a - XTC are on my list. No mark
b - This full-length version of Rolling Stone is stellar, and perhaps the only instance of wah-wah guitar in an R& B context I'm prepared to put up with, partly because the Motown house band, Whitfield, and indeed the string players, are in blistering form, and partly because the Temptations, even in this later, Ruffinless form, still possessed on of the greatest aggregations of voices in the genre. I didn't have to listen to it, but I did 7.5 / 10
I'll have to think about this, and come back to it[/sarcasm]

A is largely ugly, hyperactive nonsense to my ears.
I sometimes get frustrated that people don't dig beyond 2 or 3 tracks for their Whitfield Temptations. The early 70s albums are full of nuggets if you look. But still...this is a masterpiece and always great to hear.

Like most "new wave" songs, A could've benefited by being recorded at a fraction of its tempo - it's just too frenetic to be enjoyable.

Oh God, XTC. It's jaunty in the same way that the presenters from Playschool were.
B deserves a kicking for picking something as obvious as this track, but then XTC deserve the slaughtering they're on the end of here. I think B show the way here that you can still follow the 70s commandment of having 354 session musicians in the room, but have some proper separation of instrumentation in the sound, the amount of space that bass generates is a wonder to behold.
B, innit.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

no competition here. i got sick of the XTC track halfway through... and the song is less than 3 minutes long.
B is fantastic. wonderful, through and through.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
