Re: 70s Cup Round 3 Match 11
This is much closer than I expected...the Caravan track I actually quite liked - it had an interesting arrangement and didn't overstay its welcome.
The EWF is very typical of them before the hits started to really roll in - much more funk than the disco of later years. There are better examples from them though.
I think I'm going to go for A which worries me somewhat

A not to vote for it would be biting off my nose to spite my face. However, I fear that it's a vote for Captain Clothears or one of his mob though.
The EWF was excellent! Perhaps I have a change of heart before the end of the round …..

I quite enjoyed the Caravan before it turned all generic psychedelic rock.
Still better than EWF's irritating funky disco stuff. Eurgh, listening to this I'm just reminded of the path it laid for the likes of Bruno Mars. No thanks.

A shoulda picked 'I Wish I Were Stoned', which is the real beauty off that album
B is my fave EWF track anyway - hard to beat

Re: 70s Cup Round 3 Match 11
The Caravan track reminded me of some of the instrumental passages in longer Doors tracks, rather strangely because nothing else I've heard by them sounds like The Doors. I liked the muscularity of the playing here, but it did rather get stuck on one idea. Probably the best prog track we've had so far though.
B captures EWF at that exact midway point between their early heavy jazz-funk and the later more commercial, hit making period. Given I like both periods, it's no surprise I like this a lot.

One of my favorite songs from 7th grade. I was 12. Love it then, love it now. Their guitar player is criminally underrated. And those EW&F horns. Always punchy, always glorious.
Up there with Flashlight as one of the greatest song endings ever.

A had nice psych workout going on which suits my temperament today more than B's blaring harshness (although the chorus does help to mellow it out a touch...)

A sounds like Robert Wyatt again, being really dirgy again. And just as I write that it kicks into a bit of an uptempo gear. A chunky, clunky thing with some fret-wankery happening right here, right now. I guess this is the sort of thing that you were glad for at a free festival, safe in the knowledge you could go for a shit in a muddy field and feel that you were getting the better deal than anyone remaining near the stage. Christ it's dragging on, how can this only be 5 minutes long? Is it possible to play youtube at the wrong speed?
B really isn't my kind of thing, but at least the vocals are only irritating, rather than pointedly obnoxious. It's got a bit of energy, and I like the attack on the horns. And it isn't A.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Caravan helped launch every hacky sack laden jam band in the 90's..guarantee they all had it...Therefore my vote is for B...

Re: 70s Cup Round 3 Match 11
ack!
i love both tracks. both of em.
the caravan song is just a trippily cool psych kinda item.
but here's the thing: i was a head in the 70s. (just think of the movie dazed and confuzed, and yer pretty much there.) however, shining star was its own rallying cry to dance. we all loved it. i love it whole-heartedly, ample-assedly, and i might hafta play it again, right this very now.
apologies to A. the tide of kathish history wins this one.

If I had to choose between the artists, it'd be Caravan all the way. But this is a song vs song contest and A is not a very good one and B it is. Sorry, but
