Ian Hunter.... seriously lacking invention, isn't he?

Of course this is my favourite Bruce track (probably).....an absolute fucking masterpiece.

I'm quite surprised that someone has picked this Springsteen classic, as it seems such an obvious choice. Nevertheless, you won't get me voting against it.

Dear old Ian 'Unter never stood a chance.

There was something a bit odd and abrasive about the verses in A as if Hunter was getting a bit new wave arty, in fact it reminded me a bit of late 70s Bowie ( and It's No Game in particular). That mood dissipated very quickly though with that pedestrian cock-rock chorus.

I guess you either really buy into Springsteen's romanticism or you don't. Although there are exceptions, I largely don't. And if you don't, it can all sound very contrived and overblown. It doesn't help that it reminds me of things it influenced like 'Rat Trap' and 'Jack and Diane'.

A, although it probably doesn't deserve it.

It's hard to get too excited about an Ian Hunter song that sounds like so many other Ian Hunter songs, but it seems like the underdog here so here you go: A

I had some Ian Hunter songs in mind, like Wild East or Bastard. This is not one of them.

B is ok, but I struggle to identify with his music. And then the saxophone ( I don't like saxophone ).

The heightened street drama of Springsteen is not going to appeal to everyone and it influenced some right dreck but for a brief moment Springsteen was like some kind of rock n roll visionary.

I'm not sure how anything could be worse than A. What is it with fucking horrific vocals in this cup? Coupled with a cockernee bash on the old joanna, and some lumpen guitar work. This is like Slade hitting the skids, Noddy Holder becoming a sad shell of a man spending all day in the pub watching the horse racing and drinking 16 pints of mild over the course of the day, occasionally telling people he used to be in a band and trying to remember one of his old songs on the broken piano in the corner.

Having said that, 9 minutes of Bruce seems like a bit of a fucking slog, especially when it starts in such a cheesy way. I recognise that piano line though, and it's quite a fleet-footed thing, lighter than the hairy-throated beer-bellied vocal. It's all very overblown in an unpleasant Meatloaf way. Daytime radio 2. Oh, I can't be arsed listening to this all the way through, a bloated corporate entertainment of a track. but its better than A's Creme Brulee.

i admit i'm not much of a springsteen fan. i have problems with him. strangely enough, most of my handful of bruce moments are more quiet, intimate, less overblown.

i am, however, an ian hunter fan. i like this track quite a bit. (i'd also add that *this* is the kind of mick ronson i can really sink my fangs into.)

I distinctly remember to be blown away the first time I heard Born to Run, got it immediately and it still remains one of my fave Bruce records. I know by heart every single note of it. And I think that Jungleland is by far its weakest track. There are too many wrong things in it, the strings, the different parts not welding well enough, the cliches in the words and the coda, OMG, the coda is so wrong. If only it finished at the end of the brilliant sax solo ...

A is generic and middle class 70s rock by the numbers. I would have voted for any other track out of Born To Run, but choosing Jungleland deserves some punishment.

I met Ian Hunter in the queue of John Peel's Show back in 1970 at the time of Hoople's first album - I had no idea who he was and we stood chatting for about 20 minutes. A nice bloke.

Bruce Springsteen I have never met but I am sure he is also a nice bloke.

As for the music I find it hard to get excited about Bruce's music although I recognise it is quality (but sadly, not for me)

Most of Ian's stuff is for me and this fine track, taken from his eponymous debut, is no exception with John Gustafson of Quatermass on bass guitar

That IH cut is fine, but it's not in the same league as Bruce here.

I hated Bruce until I dug into that album, and this was one of the ones that (mostly) convinced me

Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
